#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity Just some political background in Entropic Son. There are corp-controlled regions and free regions (which the corps call "the wasteland"). Alexei is the military commander of the Diamond Heads gang, which controls the majority of the Hellmouth valley.

Both the Diamond Heads and the Triggers had footholds in Nepsis, and their relationship was shaky at best. The last alliance between the two gangs had dissolved over a decade earlier after the Wasteland Syndicate was at last pushed out of Hellmouth, and they’d been quietly vying for territory since. But far more dangerous than other gangs were the corps.
Corporation trade routes ran through Nepsis in all directions, so over half the town’s infrastructure and populace were corp-owned. Gangs might control the turf surrounding Nepsis, but in the tradetown itself, everyone bowed to the corps. As someone born and raised in a freetown, Alexei couldn’t adjust to the clatter of arachnid feet on cobblestones, the buzz of apids overhead, or the looming chelic shadows as they stood guard before administrative buildings.

Alan is extremely patient. This makes him very good at his job, but arguably he's too patient. He can patiently endure a lot of bullshit, so he does, even when maybe he shouldn't. Sven is capable of being patient, but he actively chooses not to be, because he's an ungovernable gremlin.

#WritingCommunity A core premise of Triple Strike is "what if humans were kinda mid and the actually powerful alien species either a) want to larp pirates, because crime is fun or b) go along with larping pirates, because they're just generally peaceable."

At the time, Alan had no idea what to expect from a counter-boarding. Humans rarely managed to subdue attacking pyrean vessels, and when they did, the events were so chaotic, the Elite never got particularly accurate information from the witnesses.
Yet whatever Alan had been expecting from the few records he’d read, the actual events were not at all that. There was a brief flurry of hand-to-hand combat between the ma’jenn and the Swallow’s boarding crew, but it seemed more like a formality than a life-or-death struggle. Neither side used weapons, not even their standard-issue daggers, and after a few of the crew were tossed to the ground by the deceptively willowy-looking ma’jenn fighters, the Swallow’s crew conceded defeat.
The day’s events whirred by from there. The Swallow’s deckhands returned the goods taken from the star seeker, while Sven met with the ma’jenn captain in the bridge’s conference room. The meeting was perfunctory. Both captains seemed to know the procedure well, and while Alan didn’t quite understand what was happening, he got the gist when Sven paid a fine as tribute to the Moon Empire for delaying the star seeker.
The captain of the star seeker, a tall ma’jenn with dark braids and set of splendid, multi-pointed horns, had more of their crew board the Swallow to treat any injured crew members, and after the captains confirmed everyone had received basic first aid and that both vessels were stable enough to Gate, the star seeker towed the Merry Swallow through a wormhole to a nearby ma’jenn-pyrean colony.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity Lots of observing happens in both Triple Strike and Entropic Son, so I'll go with Entropic Son. Yet another discussion about the nature of existence. These happen a lot. I was writing Entropic Son while reading Brothers Karamazov and playing MGS4 and it shows tbh...

Swinging his legs, Janus propped his elbows on the table. “That's just how we make ourselves feel better. Dress it up all you like, at the end of the day, everything's chemicals. We're all just chemicals.”
Reid's smile returned, something mischievous gleamed in his eyes. “I see Derek's been talking to you. I'll let you in on a secret, Janus. Derek's a much better programmer than he is a biologist. It's not hard to explain away emotions and ideals, but from a scientific perspective, we should never get too enamored with our theories.
“We can observe our environment and ourselves, but what we see is the effect rather than the cause. Explanations about why things are the way they are may be more or less plausible, but it's foolish to assume that our observations about human behavior encapsulate things like purpose or the nature of existence.”
Janus narrowed his eyes. “What? Like God?”
“Yes, God, I suppose,” Reid rubbed at his chin. “Other things too. Concepts like love and compassion. Justice. I can give you a reasonable explanation for their biological significance, but what they mean to us, why they're so fundamental to our existence…” Reid trailed off with a shake of his head. “Even if we're a product of our genetic material, we're capable of more than that encoding. I'm certain of it. In this case, Derek is simply wrong.”
Janus crossed his arms. “But you can't prove it.”
“And you can't disprove it.” When Janus just glowered, Reid let out a gentle laugh. “I'm just saying, Janus, don't let Derek's cynicism rub off on you. If you want to believe the glass is half empty, no one can stop you, but don't take Derek's word for it. He's wrong more often than he cares to admit.”

#WritingCommunity Triple Strike is far future so while there are sovereign states, there's not really a notion of "nation." Thus I will instead inflict upon you this info dump about how, 600 years prior to TS, corporate power grabs helped humanity avoided Gundam-style wars. Thanks, Google!

Earth grew richer by the day, and by all indications, the era should’ve been a time of plenty for all — the greatest, wealthiest age experienced in human history. In practice, it was a time of fear. Six hundred years ago, Earth and her solar colonies had been on the cusp of all-out war. Ongoing trade wars and colonial power grabs were coming to a head, as Earth’s superpowers came into direct conflict with each other and their colonies. War on a solar scale seemed inevitable.
As numerous governments teetered on the brink of collapse, and with multiple colonies calling for independence, eighteen of the largest corporate conglomerates proposed the formation of the HGBs, or Human Governing Bodies. HGBs would provide planet-wide regulation for each planet or colony, including Earth herself. While these HGBs wouldn’t have direct ownership of any planetside resources, they’d control the standards and oversights between the planetside nations, and, more importantly, they’d handle trade and regulation into and out of each planetary body.
Naturally, the corporations suggested they should oversee the development of HGB policies, offering vague promises of neutrality. It was a blatant power grab, but with the threat of total war looming, and as the power of the sovereign states eroded, citizens of Earth and the solar colonies accepted these governmental bodies despite their minimal oversight.
Fast forward twenty years, and the HGBs no longer made any pretense of separation from their corporate interests. They created positions for “guiding representatives” from each of the eighteen corporations that influenced both HGB policies and budget. It would be another fifty years before these appointments were challenged as illegal, when the six surviving corporations faced hundreds of lawsuits across both national courts and within the HGB courts themselves.

The "entropic" in Entropic Son alludes to both thermodynamic and information theory entropy with darkness being their direct symbol throughout the books. It's both the inevitable decline of order, and the uncertainty of information -- our existential despair, and the depths of our potential.

As the lift began to move, Alan was silent for a long moment. “Thank you,” he said at last. “Thank you for coming back for me.”
Sven rubbed the back of his neck with a sigh. “I shouldn’t have left you there. It was cocky of me to assume the situation would be under control, and my arrogance put your life in danger. I’m just glad I made it in time. And that you decided not to trust me by staying there.”
“And the bridge is okay with you disappearing on this personal errand?”
“It’s on Valtra’s watch and she’s more than capable. Once I get you back to our quarters, I’ll resume command from the bridge. But no pyrean is going to leave anyone — even an Elite rat — to die in space.”
Time stopped for an instant as they deGated.
“I misjudged you, Captain Jiordson,” Alan murmured. “I have been rude and dismissive toward you, and I apologize for —”
The alarms went off again, followed by the ship rocking. Sven stumbled into Alan, causing them to both tumble into a pile on the floor. The lift creaked to a halt with an ominous groan.
“Bloody star fall,” Sven snarled with unusual ferocity. He tapped the comm on his belt, not bothering to get off of Alan. “Bridge. Report!”

Sven's Stupid Fucking Notions that play Yackety Sax in the background but somehow work out better than Alan's Actual Good Plans are in fact one of the series' longest running jokes.

“Okay. I’ve got some good news, and some bad news, and finally some good news.”
“Oh no.”
Sven ignored Alan’s distressed murmur, counting out each piece of news on a gloved finger. “First, the good news is, I am willing to believe you were not aware of the contents of the briefcase. Given what we know about your neighbor on that transport, I suspect you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. So all-in-all, I’m glad I didn’t cut your thumb off?”
“Um, thank you?”
“The bad news is, I wasn’t planning on taking anyone prisoner, not even that FG spy, and I’d feel bad putting you in the brig if you’re just as much of a victim as we are. But, uh, since you are here, we do need to find a place to keep you safe.”
And keep the ship safe from Alan, Sven didn’t add. Alan crossed his arms. “So the final good news is…?”
Sven pumped his fist with excitement. “I have an idea!”

“Roger that,” Valtra said with a crisp salute, rising to her feet and waving her Bravo teammates toward a ship waiting at the edge of the landing pad. “But I’d like the record to note that I both object to the code name, and that I think this is yer stupidest idea yet, Captain.”
Sven grimaced. He’d be the first to admit “Operation Jail Break” was not the most creative of code names, but he was working on a short timeline, and there were numerous concerns beyond coining something inspiring. For one, he needed to make sure he didn’t lose his job. For another, Alan couldn’t lose his job either. And yes, Sven agreed it was a stupid idea, but “stupidest” was probably going too far.

Sven fell deep into thought, arms folded before him.
After a long pause, Sven perked up. “Oh!”
“Oh no…” Alan grimaced.
That particular tone of Sven’s never failed to raise the hairs on the back of Alan’s neck. It was the sound of Sven coming up with some sort of harebrained scheme that were just ridiculous enough to work. It was the sound of loopholes.
Sven grinned as he looked Alan up and down with growing mischief. Part of Alan dreaded whatever nonsense Sven was planning, but another, morbidly curious, part of him was desperate to know.
“All right, Jiordson,” Alan muttered. “Spill it. What are you cooking up this time?”
“It’s a great plan, Alan. You’re going to love it.” When Alan just arched an eyebrow, Sven’s eyes flashed with devilish glee. “I think it’s time we got married.”
