I'd guess no because the effect seemed to be more about partnership costing more than marriage costing more. My best guess is that new costs are more salient than new savings. Feel free to email if you want to see the draft.

Right? But, we've published that lower SES is related to less likelihood of partnering, and we have a paper under review now showing that people think that relationships are more expensive than singlehood. So the bottleneck seems to be financial pressure preventing partnership in the first place.

The first question reporters usually ask me is why more people are single these days. Now we have a handy summary from the best person to answer this question, Elyakim Kislev, with his synopsis of his Oxford Handbook of Singlehood chapter: www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/happ...

How do singles' expectations about romantic relationships relate to their happiness in singlehood?
110
Geoff MacDonald 🇨🇦 @gmacdonalduoft.bsky.social · 27/04/2026
4) Singles seeing partnership as bringing higher intimacy felt worse about being single, were more likely to partner, and were happier with partnership if they did get into a relationship.
100
Geoff MacDonald 🇨🇦 @gmacdonalduoft.bsky.social · 27/04/2026
3) Singles with more negative perceptions of partnership didn't seem to feel much better about singlehood, but were less likely to partner. Good choice, they felt more negatively about their relationship if the did partner.

2) Women see partnership as bringing more negativity than men, but also more intimacy. Men see partnership as bringing more status gain.
