Answering questions from Police Federation members, the Home Secretary rejected claims that police forces are “institutionally racist”. That's what Braverman means by a "“campaign against political correctness” - the same as always, cover for state racism www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crim...

The surprising thing isn't so much the tactic - an intimidation tactic calculated to stir fear in relation to local beliefs. The surprising this is that Amazon gold cartels have access to fucking JETPACKS

So, I just did some reading on this and, yeah, looks like alluvial gold mining gangs in the Amazon used fucking jetpacks and dressed up as aliens to attack indigenous people this year.

Deforestation in the Amazon is threatening South American monsoon patterns. If this study is correct, we are on the verge of a *rapid* decline in rainfall, of up to 30% present rates. This is the rainforest's death knell.

The Tory Party conference this year has been a circus of absurdity and reaction on a scale eclipsing any of their prior efforts. They have nothing but PR massaged violence to offer. An opposition in waiting, preparing to consolidate the far-right around it for the long haul.

This is not the first time British troops have been sent to Ukraine since February 2022, however. They've been there for the duration of this phase of the war (and before but that's a distinct thing).

One big factor in why Britain is particularly aggressive over Ukraine: Shell secured a 50 year exclusive deal to exploit the natural gas fields in the east of Ukraine, between Kharkiv and Donetsk, in late 2013. The outbreak of war has stopped the investment from realisation.

To be clear: this is the first time since February 2022 that British troops will be deployed in Ukraine *openly*. That is a major escalation, verging on catastrophic. Whether or not the troops are there for training (doubt), the potential for open direct conflict is huge.

Let’s be real the lack of solidarity with disabled people across the British left is fucking appalling. Even the bare basics are lacking. We’re still being told things like: “sorry we haven’t got the budget for it”. (I don't think it's just a British thing but it is very bad here)

What I mean isn't the chauvinist "class analysis first" shit. What I mean is that following the bourgeois media and its provocations down every rabbit hole or focusing on individuals to nauseous obsession is doing neither class analysis nor solidarity with oppressed people.

It feels futile to say that to not be beaten by the culture war shit, the left needs to stop biting at this point. Focus on signifiers and individuals above conditions, policy and class throughout the online left seems pretty ubiquitous, to the point of compulsivity.

The UK is a nightmare for trans people. Attitudes are not just becoming more reactionary, but are moving from a laissez-faire ignorance to hardened hate. There is no previously existing model of solidarity, but there is an increasingly entrenched cult of anti-trans violence and dehumanisation.

GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 26/09/2023
There's a difference between understanding how institutions utilise history for ideological reproduction and "the sins of the father pass unto the son". The latter is a-historical moralising and, regrettably, seems to be the dominant view among the popular anglophone left.

My view is that what can end the quagmire is that it can only be practical things. Atm it feels like a lot of ecosocialism doesn't really know what to *do* in terms of action, so I think we need to force a strategic perspective.

GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 26/09/2023
I think that's a very reasonable commentary and I agree. I don't think the critique of degrowth or ecomodernism within it is good if I'm honest - quite ironically misses what the real crits are of both. But yeah, I do agree with it on the character of the discourse.

GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 25/09/2023
The two tendencies contain a few different definitions each tbh, and idk if that is the root of the problem. I think a lot the animosity can be rooted in the stakes of popular academic confrontation. Public intellectuals gotta showboat these days, so detail and constructive debate suffer.

GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 25/09/2023
Not defending his choice of publication at all, to be clear. I think the misrepresentation of degrowth is more egregious, but it does occur on both sides. Bit tired rn, but I'll try to remember to dig out some examples tomorrow!

GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 25/09/2023
The ending paragraph doesn't make very much sense at all and is misleading, do agree there. It earnestly feels like it comes out of nowhere. I think it's most realistically just been shoved in to meet a brief unherd put in after accepting a draft, but it does contain a right wing canard.
010
GlumBird @glumbird.bsky.social · 25/09/2023
I don't think he is punching left here. Do agree with the crit of the publication though. Can understand not wanting to give him a generous reading, but I think it weakens the counter-arguments not to. To be clear, I don't the article is very good; my concern is effective criticism.
