I kinda loved the very vague matter-of-fact way Shirow talked about geopolitics in the manga, it had that George Lucas edge of “this is a detail that’d be juicy to you but to these characters it’s mundane world news”, so taking out the specifics what little real connection there is, is lame

You’re so right yeah! The violence & killsquad antics don’t bother me much, it’s more that feeling that it’s being presented in a cool badass cop way. Still enjoying the show for the most part but … yeah. Interesting & bad in equal measure. Also thanks for the reminder that I need to watch SAC!

Still grateful I get to see more of her bratty manga personality but this adaptation, again, has me reassessing the OG. Motoko gives refugee kids a Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps talk & Batou scolds the trafficked girls for getting people killed in their hacking mayday?? Just bafflingly odd tbh

I will say I’m watching it dubbed with “forced” subs that just subtitle the footnotes and signage so it’s not unwatchable … but it’s still annoying. I’ve been slamming the pause button lot while watching it on my own, orz

Also the footnotes are stupid, absolutely. They didnt need to adapt that part of the manga accurately?? It’s bizarre. In the copy I have Shirow even has an afterword like “I don’t expect you to read those noes in the middle of the story, it breaks the flow so just go back later and refer to them”

Some of it really didn’t land for me either, funnily enough I really liked it once the Puppet Master plotline started! I also bought a new copy of the manga to refer to & with this adaptation/the dub being pretty accurate to that, it’s making me wonder if I like the original less than I thought…

The ADV dub for Evangelion is exposing me to a particular timbre of American accent I have never heard in anime before, it’s charmingly refreshing and ever so slightly odd. Also I’m watching Evangelion. Finally filling a gap in my older weeb education and salivating over those 90s colours.
