Ik ging naar Duinkerken Dunkerque voor de wijk Excentric. Op zijn best originele huizen met een vleug Art Deco. Een groot deel is helaas totaal verbouwd of vervallen. De wijk verdient beter. Wat denk jij als lezer?

L'Excentric Moulins. Ooit een dancing, nu rest nog de poort. Het was Reynaerts laatste ontwerp uit 1939 in Excentric in Duinkerken/Dunkerque. Once a dance hall; now, only the gateway remains. It was Reynaerts' final design—dating from 1939—for the Excentric in Dunkirk. #modernism #artdeco

Erfgoedalarm. Een aantal huizen in de wijk Excentric in Duinkerken Dunkerque is er slecht aan toe. Het huis van Reynaerts zelf 'Les Disques' is bijna een ruïne. Heritage alarm. Some houses in the Excentric neighborhood of Dunkirk are in bad shape Reynaerts' house 'Les Disques' is almost a ruin.

Het stadhuis van Duinkerken mag er ook zijn! Architect L.M. Cordonnier, van het Vredespaleis in Den Haag. Gebouwd tussen 1897 en 1901. Dunkirk’s town hall is quite impressive, too! It was built between 1897 and 1901 by architect L.M. Cordonnier. He designed the Peace Palace in The Hague, too.

De burgers van Calais. Auguste Rodin. De gieting voor het stadhuis in Calais is de oudste, uit 1895. The Burghers of Calais. Auguste Rodin. The casting in front of the Calais town hall is the oldest, dating from 1895.

Calais werd in 1347 na een elf maanden durend beleg gedwongen tot overgave wegens de grote hongersnood in de stad. Koning Edward III was geërgerd door het kostbare tijdsverlies en wilde de inwoners alleen sparen als de zes belangrijkste burgers hem de sleutels van de stad zouden overhandigen, blootsvoets, met onbedekte hoofden en met een strop om hun nek, om daarna meteen gehangen te worden. Ontroerd door de zelfopoffering van de mannen, die in niets anders dan hun hemd waren gekleed, wierp koningin Filippa van Henegouwen zich aan de voeten van haar man en smeekte hem hun leven te sparen, wat dan ook gebeurde.

De grafheuvels op de Regte Heide bij Goirle zijn afkomstig uit de Bronstijd (ca. 1750 v. Chr.). De palenkrans is een reconstructie. The burial mounds on the Regte Heide near Goirle date back to the Bronze Age (c. 1750 BC). The circle of posts is a reconstruction.

Bakstenen reus. De watertoren in Lüneburg (1905) is niet meer in gebruik maar bepaalt nog steeds het stadsbeeld. Hij wordt nu voor concerten gebruikt en is uitzichtspunt. Brick giant. The water tower in Lüneburg from 1905 is no longer in use. It is now used for concerts and serves as a viewpoint.
