EPISODE 5

Nicholas De Genova on the production of illegality and the revolving doors of asylum, feat. Soledad Álvarez Velasco

“The way in which migrants are telling their stories about struggles allows us to see them, not as numbers, but seeing them as human beings in struggle, and that their struggles are connected with other struggles of people that have been historically oppressed, and in this intersection, I would say that we can definitely rethink and recreate a more humane system to understand mobility.”

EPISODE 4

Ayşe Çağlar on migration, displacement, and urban transformation, feat. Ana Ćuković

“For me, it is important to understand what displacement results in and how power reconfigures at that time. When there's the narrative of a migrant as a person who contributes to our neighborhoods, and you know, increases the tax value and contributes to diversity and culture, and you know, just really improves our communities and that's why we need them. That type of narrative often very much neglects and really marginalizes the fact that the reason many people do migrate is because of the very kind of constellations of power and capital that we are seeing in this country and the way it operates across the world.”

Jørgen Carling on Aspiration, feat. Kerilyn Schewel

“When I first entered grad school and started studying migration, I was struck by the fact that our migration theories couldn't explain a pretty fundamental social fact, which is that most people don't move. So, a lot of our migration theories have focused so much on explaining why people migrate, but when you apply them to the real world, they don't really explain why the vast majority of humanity still lives in the country in which they were born.”
