“Visibility carries weight.” In our new, exclusive Representation Matters interview, photographer Claire Thomas reflects on visual justice, ethical representation & the responsibilities of images. 🔗 bit.ly/4uCwAuq #RepresentationMatters #ThisIsGender #EthicalPhotography #VisualJustice #Global5050
BANISHED, Northern Region, Ghana - 2024
by Claire Thomas

Fusheina, a widow and mother of five, returns to the hut where she has lived in exile for six years. She is one of hundreds of women in northern Ghana accused of witchcraft, often by their own families or communities, and forced to seek refuge in so-called “witch camps.” These women are not there by choice: most flee or are sent away because to remain in their villages would mean risking their lives. Accusations of witchcraft exist beyond the reach of formal law yet are deeply entangled with social and structural inequality. They often arise from personal disputes, jealousy, or local misfortunes, and are almost always gendered.

“In health research and policy, who leads determines whose knowledge counts.” – Catherine Kyobutungi, APHRC Our #ClosingtheGap? report shows that on average women-led orgs have smaller #GenderPayGaps, highlighting how inclusive #leadership drives fairer workplaces. 📊 bit.ly/GPGR25 #GenderJustice

When women lead, accountability and inclusion follow. Global 50/50’s evidence linking women’s leadership to smaller pay gaps confirms what we see in practice: decolonising global health begins with representation, and inclusive leadership builds fairer, more effective systems for all.” The graphic also features a headshot of Catherine, the Global 50/50 logo and the hashtag #ClosingTheGap. Quote by Seri Wendoh, International Planned Parenthood Federation Senior Technical Advisor, featured in the 2025 Global Health 50/50 report: “In the face of growing hostility to gender equality and reproductive rights, holding the line is not enough. For organisations working across diverse and often difficult contexts, staying true to our values means rooting our work in the realities of the communities we serve, not in the shifting winds of political convenience. When the space to act narrows, we find new ways to act, to speak, and to stand with those most affected.” At the bottom of the graphic, it reads: “Read more in Holding the Line - 2025 Global Health 50/50 report.”

🏆 WINNER: ‘Fragmented Faces’ by Hardeep Singh uses sign language-inspired gestures and abstract forms to explore #Deaf and gendered identity. A powerful meditation on how the body becomes a medium of meaning. 🖼️ Explore #CrippingTheLens: bit.ly/44FvuDf #ThisIsGender #Disability
A black-and-white digital artwork by Hardeep Singh titled “Fragmented Faces”, featuring repeated, stylised male-presenting faces with moustaches, partially obscured or overlaid by abstract symbols, disjointed lines, stitched textures, and hand motifs. Each face is divided, layered, or incomplete, evoking fragmentation and fluidity. The hand shapes—some with padlock icons—suggest both communication in sign language and restriction. The composition blends portraiture with textile-like repetition, reflecting Deaf and gender-nonconforming identities and the tension between resilience and erasure.
