I *should* give the game more credit since Hazy Maze Cave was a brilliant metaphor for Mario's conflicted emotional landscape concerning Peach -- the toxic mist of yearning suppressed beneath chivalry, a pool of aching desire subsumed into pursuing a platonic cake. That level was brilliant, no notes

(I never played either this or the cancer game. Sharing intense personal grief through games was a thing for a while in the mid-2010s, and, like, art is art, no one forced us to play them, no harm no foul)

much is made of Mario 64, but the world design wasn't, like, you must cautiously guide a monster, who is by turns sympathetic and terrifyingly violent, and represents Mario's alcoholic father, through a dilapidated neighborhood world. Instead we got a second water world and a second ice world

old movie buffs like me were like "wait what?" Sad either way.

The premise already makes me think "well, this will be a possibly uncomfortable watch from the present day" so I wonder where the series went with it

It's, like, kinda that same cluster of people though right? Like *handwaves* you know, English comedic horror

I have that with IMDB ratings (1000+ now!), but I know that's the uncool-kid version because it's in the Bezosverse and doesn't let one drop witty blurbs. I should migrate eventually, but hrrgh that sounds like work

Slow-paced and thoughtful sounds good tbh. If it's not scary or psychologically unsettling I can probably get Korb to watch it if he hasn't already

looking over my movies to see / recommendations from friends spreadsheet (ofc I have one), it's like wait, didn't I see Weird Science? Oh, nope, that was Real Genius wait, didn't I see Primer? Oh, nope, that was Looper wait, didn't I see Shaun of the Dead? Oh, nope, that was Attack the Block

I've never really wanted to watch The Village, The Happening, Old, The Visit, etc. because they seem to be just the twist and not much else, and the twist has no real resonance. The (ironically named) pair of Split and Unbreakable seem to be rated decently well though, so maybe I'll give them a try

OK, yeah, The Sixth Sense was really good, though more for its solid emotional core than for its meticulously-hidden-in-plain-sight-all-along twist. And it seems that the director subsequently leaned into the latter without ever really nailing the former again. Or does he have other truly good ones?

this string of recent 3s and 4s is Bruce Willis's IMDB page? I had to check that there wasn't some other actor called that -:(

jesus, the scene right at the beginning where M. Night Shyamalan comes out and sits in a director's chair, facing us, and says "it is important for you to keep in mind, as you watch this film, that Bruce Willis's character is dead. I hope you enjoy: The Sixth Sense." could have used a DEFTER TOUCH

I don't mean as in brute force is now tractable, but more as in some AI discovers some unanticipated number field sieve trick or quirk of discrete log and oops

Honestly, I wonder what crazy stuff has been happening in applied cryptography if this is what's been going on in pure math, and those results might speak for themselves in a scary way. The whole idea of a trapdoor function feels shakier now that there are supercharged try-everything machines around

using manespace stud; @glimmerstomp.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Oh I think that ship has sailed, and I think the math community broadly agrees, and everyone's trying to figure out where the field goes next, because we still like math and it's still useful and beautiful.

Best case scenario is that digesting and understanding these proofs will get us some real insights.

Well, Lean formalization is good enough for promotion these days. And yeah, there was that fuzziness about whether the AI had learned from a researcher's recent advances, and it was gross. But it's clear that they can solve these things "on their own" (after having digested the corpus of research)

"but Glim, this has been a revolution in human knowledge, you should be happy" Nope. I mean, yes, it's cool to know that the UGC is true and Hadwiger is false and such. But a discipline once based on global collaboration is now going to be essentially owned by a handful of frankly evil companies.

the OpenAI proof dump continues to give me that awful feeling that math is an escape room in which our human team ran out of time as of summer 2026, and now we're being walked through how it works (but not in a way that actually explains how it all works) I'm grieving, and I'm not even a researcher

People talking about pitch tipping like it's new. You look for the wink or the open mouth or the flickering jewel in the headwear. There's a particular guy in the stands taking pictures and you want to swing at the exact time you see the camera flash. It's a two-frame window but that's the 2020s MLB

I can see him handing over LA as a rhetorical sacrifice, since it's everything he hates. But throwing in San Diego? Our city where you get a military discount on your burrito with fries inside? Our city that routinely honors veterans at Padres games? What the fuck was he thinking besides "fuck CA"
