This afternoon, Curling Ontario announced that Curling Canada will adopt World Curling rules for 2026-2027 and will no longer publish a separate Canadian rulebook. Final rule updates will be announced sometime in September following the World Curling Congress.

British statistician George Box is famous for saying "All models are wrong... some models are useful." Certainly true here. Understanding the relationship between the timing systems is helpful, but there are so many ways in which errors can occur. Weight judgement is an important skill. 3/3

(2) hog-to-hog times are not linear but exponential, meaning that a 5% increase/decrease in a split time will likely not result in a similar 5% change in the hog-to-hog time, especially at lower stone velocities. 2/3

Splits can be useful, especially to novice players, but as you say delivery inconsistencies amongst the players on a team can render split times meaningless. To me the biggest takeaways in all of this are (1) the coefficient of friction is not constant through a shot and ... 1/3

Nonetheless, the additional length can be very helpful to taller players who struggle with keeping their upper arm in a good bio-mechanical position with a shorter handle. Moreover, with a 20mm inside diameter, the Velocity fits lots of different brush heads including Hardline and Performance.

I think many curlers are unaware that Asham’s sells their Velocity prismatic handles in both 48- and 54-inch lengths. The 54-inch can be very helpful for tall players who, say, are over 6’ 2”. Regrettably they do not come with a grip coating, and are not 100% carbon fibre. 1/2

Many in my extended family served in either WW1 or WW2, including my father, but on Remembrance Day I particularly remember my Uncle Ken, terribly wounded on August 1 1944, and Leslie’s Uncle Charlie, my cousin Frank Paulley, and Bernice’s brother Don who did not come home. #LestWeForget
