I agree. It ties in with what I was saying about virtue signalling on here as well. The people rallying against the BBC and saying they don't pay their licence fee or even look at BBC News anymore post a link or scrennshot...from the BBC.

The point that I'm trying to make is that it is a constant pile on, on BBC News for reporting or not reporting certain items. Multiple news sources always report the same stories with no collective gnashing of teeth but how dare the BBC...

The target of people's ire should quite rightfully and justifiably be at Jim Ratcliffe, not the BBC. This same 'story' is being reported by The Guardian, The Independent, The Telegraph, The Sun, The Times, The Mirror, Irish Independent but apparently it's another example the BBC's "right wing bias"

I get that it may have been bulletins but this is taken from the website. It's not even on the main news section.

My argument is that this BBC News article is taken from the Business section. I don't like the man and disagree wholeheartedly with him but this is yet another attempt at bashing the BBC, taken out of context and presented as if this is the main news headline. It's the third article on Business.

It's not headline news, that's why it is in the business section.

And what section of BBC News is this taken from....?

Khan, the Labour Mayor of London, campaigning for Labour in a London seat? That's not posturing that's quite literally the Labour Mayor of London, campaigning for Labour in a London seat.

I'm guilty of it as well but it's just getting so tiresome and exhausting. It's like virtue signal, confirmation bias HQ. I think I might be done. Social media obviously just doesn't work. Burn it all down.

I really enjoyed Bluesky when it started. It was a breath of fresh air for social media. You could discuss things, there was no spite. Lately it has descended into point scoring, lots of "ackshulky" posts and everyone thinking they are morally superior to everyone else. 1/2

Listen. Your experience is important. Everyone's experience is important. One person's experience is not someone else's.

This is conversation where you just started on me with the expression "the Brits are at it again."

No official proclamation of "make sure children don't look too Jewish" was issued.

Well that's where your education and mine vastly differ then. Do you think every person who by accident of birth is born in a certain country is responsible for everything that country ever perpetrated?

Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I (British with Irish and Welsh in my blood) was taught about our past in school. The UK has acknowledged it's past but your don't want to hear that do you?

So your assertion is that the Industrial Revolution was not powered by child labour? Is that what you're saying?
000
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The Industrial Revolution was powered by forced child labour and abuse of the poor. Any reparations for them as well?
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
And the power of the Navy...powered by press gangs. This is my point. The UK was powered not just by slavery. Should the UK government be responsible solely for reparations or shouldn't the families and private companies that profited actually be smouldering the reparations?
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Tax forms 90% of UK Government revenue.
000
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
And the government gets its money from...
010
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Does the UK government then get it's money back by seizing assets in Bristol and Glasgow? Two cities literally built on the profits of slavery. I'm not diminishing the evils of slavery, just wondering how reparations would work for all victims of the State.
111
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
As the UK State will be paying the reparations that means that it will be coming out of general taxation. Does this mean that descendants of slaves get a tax rebate as well? What about descendants of brake abolitionists. Are they liable to have their taxes used to pay?
200
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Also, regarding Jamaica. How do you decide who is owed reparations from the UK and who is owed from Spain? Regarding the UK, the East India Company was centred in Glasgow as well as London. How do you divide the reparations between Scotland and England. How do you decide the level.of reparations?

I don't care

Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
As pressganging started in 1755 and stretched until the 19th Century I would say that encompasses a fair amount of people. As for descendents of people wrongfully transported please see modern day Australia.
110
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Why are you so patronising? I'm sorry but what is it with the constant digs? Are you OK or you just consider yourself to be superior to everyone else? Seriously, get a grip.
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
That is incorrect and also your assumption about people's background is offensive. I am from a mixed Irish and Welsh family. I think we should agree to disagree.
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
So nowhere was the phrase or instruction that children should "not look too Jewish" used. Got it.
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Where is the line drawn?
000
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
People who were press ganged were kidnapped and forcibly enrolled with death as the punishment if you tried to escape. People were tried and killed as witches by the state. So that is a crime that the UK was OK to commit then? Same with people sent to debtors prison, nothing to see here.
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I'm not comparing anything to anything. I am saying that if the UK State does pay reparations then they will also need to pay reparations to all historical victims of the State. I am well aware of what happened in slavery.
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
People put in debtors prison, people who were transported for punishment, people denied votes, people killed for being witches... I understand the call for reparations but where does the call for reparations from the UK state go back to?
110
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I would disagree with your assertion, which is why I wrote it. The UK, it's institutions and private citizens do and have admitted and educated on the historical ills. The subject of reparations is a multifaceted argument. Should the UK also pay reparations to families of people press ganged 1/2

Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
This is the point I am trying to make. I am fully aware!
100
Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I agree that there is a problem in the UK but assuming that it is because of the UK population not being aware of our past and that leading to Brexit I don't agree with. Brexit is in a very special case of its own that if everyone had actually voted would not have happened. If only we could go back

Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I left school in 1992 and was very much taught about the failings of the East India Company, the trade and life of Henry Lascelles and its associated evils. We were taught about the Indian "Rebellion" and later independence and the Kenyan repression. Unfortunately Ireland was only touched on.

Glenn Fryatt @glennfryatt.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Do I represent the state of the UK? Am I personally responsible for actions of the country that I was born in that happened hundreds of years before I was born? I think you slightly overestimate what I am personally capable of.
