@shifter.info had a nice video a few years ago about rain capes. I bought one to give it a try and now bike commuting in the rain is a solved problem for me. (Plus fenders, lights, etc.)

Latest out! Concerned about political polarization? Puzzled why dialogue between partisans often does not work out as expected? Curious whether there is an explanation? We have one! What a privilege to work with such a group of talented researchers. Note: pre-print only; feedback is most welcome!

Emergence of simple and complex contagion dynamics from weighted belief networks
Different classes of social contagion dynamics emerge from a model grounded in fundamental cognitive processes and biases.

I think Bob West at EPFL is doing something like that (at least in aiming to create an LLM based on free & open content only). That said I think a chatbot interface would miss a great aspect of the wiki way which is the ability to edit in real-time.

("crossroad" is what the Quanta article uses to refer to them, not sure if it's the same terminology in their article.)

Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia @glciampaglia.com · 14/08/2025
Ahaha, that's true. And yes, the obvious application of a faster shortest path algo is obviously in things like betweenness etc. But I was intrigued by the fact their method keeps track of "crossroads" nodes instead of relying on a full frontier.

Perhaps there is a distinction to be made between pre-existing institutions that undergo digitization at a certain point in their life (like the tax filing example) vs institutions that are born online and eventually come to discover the weight of their non-digital component (like the Twitter ex.)?

Same here. Actually I do get a few emails from high school seniors from time to time and I've meant to get back to some but I just don't know how to make that work. Does it take more time to mentor them, compared to an undergrad? And what type of skills can you expect of them? Curious to hear.

I also don't think focusing on the "badness" helps. In authoritarian regimes unofficial news are often the only source of vital information. That's a form of rumoring after all. I think that we care about of misinformation for the sake of getting things right, regardless of what they can lead to.

I agree the terminology we are stuck with is not great. But I feel that the framing around "propaganda" is too narrow; it implies focus on mass communication only, while a lot of rumoring is interpersonal / informal in nature.

Just to say that even traditional ABMs can be made to take the realism route just for the sake of realism.
000
Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia @glciampaglia.com · 24/05/2025
My advisor used to joke that the ABMs used in transportation modeling a decade or so ago were getting so pointlessly realistic that soon they would have added agents taking their dogs out to poop. (Those models try to model traffic flow by modeling behavioral patterns like commuting etc.)

Also at Hy-Swap last weekend they were trying to get rid of a whole SONY stereo set someone had dumped. (It's a baby cloth swap event, so you can imagine how much interest it was getting from the crowd.) Perhaps they may still need to get rid of it?

I started reading it to my wife back in November; now we're at the Forbidden Pool scene and so far the saddest moment we reached was hearing Treebeard sing during the march to Isengard while realizing it may be the last feat Ents will accomplish.
