I always return to this shit but like oh yeah. that's the good stuff. delicious.

One of the reasons this is important is that you can set gloss bounces to 0 and use a glossy bsdf for plain specular highlight with no reflections, but then use a ray portal to add the reflections back in for a very "retro" look
010
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 1h
And that as a result you can just plug a reflection vector into it to get reflections

oh. Huh. Somebody discovered that the Ray Portal bsdf in Blender works even if you set glossy bounces to 0.

(I know I'm just saying, for *just* the cost of that all by itself they could've been pouring those costs into an actual game and end up with a significantly better result I bet)

For example my music engine ran just fine on the Mister PS1 core *without* the workaround (which is to spin wait until two subsequent clock reads return the same value), most likely because it just implements the timers as a single atomic 16 bit read
010
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 14h
No it's a single 16 bit read from the CPU's POV but the hardware itself might be actually doing two 8 bit reads or something like that
110
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 15h
(only reason one person caught it is bc they've seen other hardware with a similar quirk and came up with that theory, which the workaround appears to fix)
110
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 15h
Current theory is that it's a 16 bit value split into two reads, upper then lower, but sometimes can be updated in between reads and if that increment overflows the lower 8 bits then the resulting value will be wrong
110
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 15h
The quirk in question is a metastability issue - at least when timer 1 is driven by hblank, occasionally sampling at the right time gives a corrupt value.

GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 15h
Not sure, maybe somebody somewhere knew about it, but several emulator maintainers in the PSX Dev server were not aware of it and I don't think official PS dev docs mention it

Shockingly productive considering I didn't really add more than like 5 lines of code to it today lmao

Well a piece of PS1 homebrew I was making to demonstrate my music engine: - Exposed a bug/quirk with reading Timer 1 on real hardware - Which helped improve the open source Psyqo library (which added a workaround) - And also exposed a separate audio timing issue in PCSX-Redux

I would still classify those two as turn based (or at least mostly turn based). Vagrant Story is still a bit less action-oriented than I'm thinking

GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
It's semi turn based like 7 & 8 are (ATB system) I'm thinking more action based (Star Ocean and Tales of Phantasia are a bit closer, though they're 2.5D)

I guess that's a good example, just with 3D characters is what I was thinking

GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Had a thought about a game that would have like PS1 style prerendered background (FF7, RE, Star Ocean etc) but then combat is just fully realtime in a 3D arena Are there any PS1 games that do something like that?

disingenuous and utterly misleading reporting by RPS here: Discord did not suffer any kind of breach this is a completely-unaffiliated-with-Discord service
Gaming chat app Discord has suffered another user data breach, with a suspected 1 million email addresses stolen alongside (potentially many more) user IDs and IP addresses. While Discord was not targeted directly, third party security service Double Counter have reported a "deliberate, multi-stage attack" wherein hackers spent nearly six hours poking around their infrastructure before the vulnerability was closed.

Double Counter essentially acts as a bouncer bot for Discord servers, promising to detect and block unsanctioned alt accounts and prevent hostile 'raids' by large groups of malicious users. While its efficacy in that mission is debated by Discord users, and the service has previously been accused of selling user data for revenue, the fact is that Double Counter can collect and store personal info of the users that visit its 'protected' servers. Info that, now, has been partly or entirely nicked by Internet miscreants.

By Double Counter’s own estimates, around 1 million user email addresses have been affected, with databases of Discord IDs, usernames, IP addresses, and even location info for up to 28 million users also "partly" copied by the hackers. Security breach trackers Have I Been Pwned further report that 275,000 of the pinched emails and usernames have since been posted publicly.

Having that swipe be a completely different action instead is the worst option imho

Idk what the term is but I really wish they would try and keep their shit "spatially consistent" if that makes sense? Like if you have the visual of the server list sliding away to one side, then my expectation is often that I can slide it back in by swiping or something

One of my least favorite gestures in chat apps like Discord or this Matrix client I'm using is "swipe a message sideways to reply to it" You know how many times I've tried to slide out the member list or list of servers I'm in but nope that replies to a message instead?

Something I have thought would be really cool (but haven't considered all of the logistics of admittedly) is that, since I like to make retro style games, I would love to have a setup at a con or something where I demo my game on an actual CRT lmao, and distribute CDs or something of that nature 😅

If a pressure mechanic is, idk, "Exploit their elemental weakness while they are taunting" that's a more interesting thing I have to go out of my way to do. "Deal enough damage" I feel like kind of removes intentionality from it though, atp "pressuring" is kind of just a thing that happens 🤷‍♀️
020
GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The main thing is that "doing damage" is something I'm already doing as a rule. Like, that's literally my whole goal with the fight is to do enough damage to kill my opponent lmao IMHO the more interesting pressure mechanics are ones that make you go out of your way to perform it

GlaireDaggers🍉🏳️‍⚧️🎃 @glairedaggers.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Thinking about this fight more to try and dissect more specifically why I didn't like it One of the things I think I dislike about the fight is the pressure criteria: "Deal enough damage to pressure him". The game does this with many enemies, and I'm not a big fan
