🔥 from @hamiltonnolan.bsky.social. I would add: billionaires are a renewable resource, sadly. Five years ago there was no OpenAI or Anthropic. We mint billionaires here in California with some regularity. The movement of capital moves both ways. www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/the-war-ag...
Some, perhaps, have legitimate fears that any wealth tax will just cause the rich to flee to other states. Prop 40 has been designed to make it hard to wriggle out of, but this fear is a perpetual one. Cities hear this when they pass local taxes; States hear it when they pass state taxes; nations hear it when they pass national taxes. It is true that the mobility of capital and the relative lack of mobility of labor is an inherent problem that makes the class war more difficult. It is also true that this is the sort of perpetual objection that is crafted to ensure that nobody anywhere ever does anything about a big problem. A global wealth tax would be ideal. In the meantime, every single locality and state and nation should be doing everything they can to capture as much of billionaire’s wealth as possible and funnel it back to the public. California, home of the tech industry, is the most sensible state in which to pass a billionaire tax. If the billionaires want to make it their life’s work to run around the world fleeing taxes, let them flee. What a sad life that would be for a group of people who could be doing anything.

The Republican Party was founded in Wisconsin, but there really is not a Wisconsin Republican Party any longer. When three people are paying for 90% of a gubernatorial campaign and 80% of legislative campaigns, you have a club, not a political party, owned and funded by billionaires.

If you are remotely familiar with Wisconsin politics, you know exactly which three billionaires (Uihleins & Hendricks) they are talking about and what they want in return. Their purchase of Ron Johnson generated a giant federal tax cut targeted towards them. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-best-d...
It is important to provide context here: Johnson had just been re-elected after polling so dismally for much of the 2016 campaign that the GOP establishment had given up on him.

Hendricks and the Uihelins did not lose faith in Johnson, spending $20 million on his seemingly doomed campaign. Their faith was amply rewarded. They benefited disproportionately from the very particular tax cut that Johnson had held out for.

In 2018 alone, the tax break Johnson engineered was worth an astonishing $215 million to his three billionaire supporters, almost one-quarter of the $1 billion benefit the tax cut provided to 82 mega-rich households. Over the course of its 8-year life, the tax cut could deliver half a billion for them.

Flock's whole thing is that they argue their system does not need a warrant and they claim this is a settled issue. Very hard to overstate the importance that a federal judge has said this is not the case. Flock's CEO just said it was "pretty cut and dry"
The new decision also immediately invalidates the core argument that Flock’s CEO Garrett Langley has made saying that Flock was not a constitutional issue. “You and I don’t get to pick what’s a constitutional violation and what’s not. We have judges, we have elected officials, there’s a process for that. We follow the law, we follow the Constitution. So far, in our belief and what will be for a long time, the courts have deemed this is not a warrantless search; this is a valid product as it relates to the Fourth Amendment. So I don’t see any change there,” Langley told The Drive in July, adding the issue was “pretty cut and dry.”

Notably, Hill suggested that other courts that have ruled Flock searches do not constitute a Fourth Amendment search were likely wrong to do so, and that they have not considered the widespread and automated context of the AI-powered surveillance system.

This is an incredibly important decision, and the judge is requiring the court to throw out all evidence obtained against her. Judge wrote Flock’s network is “a type of indiscriminate mass surveillance” and that courts must update their understanding of the technology
“The Fourth Amendment requires courts to draw a line when the cost is too great. Alaniz’s search in just the ALPR system provided him with more than 50 individual records of Kyle’s whereabouts across the country for an entire month,” Hill wrote. “The Court finds that because the ALPR systems Alaniz used to search Kyle’s historical location information intruded on her reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of her physical movements, it was a search under the Fourth Amendment. Based on the information in the record, the only reason Alaniz conducted that search was because he saw her license plate was from California.”

In terms of consequences, the changes would have two effects. First, they would eliminate existing demographic data that we use for things like estimating racial inequality. That is by design, of course. Second, it would make the Census less accurate by discouraging non-citizens from participating.
