Lunchtime walk in the vicinity of Anya’s Wood. Highlight was a Green Woodpecker, which loudly announced its arrival before landing in a dead tree for several minutes. Always a joy to actually see one. Moors looking very pink. @teesbirds.bsky.social @northyorksbirds.bsky.social

Pleasant walk between Faceby and Swainby this morning. This large buddleia bush had Painted Lady, Red Admiral and a Hummingbird Hawkmoth. My first of the latter in the NE of England. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

These sycamore keys seemed to glow in the last rays of sunshine the other night. I was out locally, unsuccessfully, trying to hear the wonderful sound of a Quail.

A short break in Northumberland and then home. It was a cold week of northerlies. Three delightful small butterflies seen and plenty of quality birding.

I came across this jigsaw in a charity shop this morning. Couldn’t resist sharing. A beautiful English cottage garden scene with a ‘typical’ selection of birds and butterflies in appropriate habitat. 😂 Needless to say I didn’t purchase. @teesbirds.bsky.social

Curious about what drives transoceanic vagrancy and what it might mean for birds? Our new paper discusses these questions in the context of Hurricane Lee and the remarkable influx of American landbirds recorded in the British Isles in September 2023. Take a look: tinyurl.com/388k3mcp

It’s on the cliff top. See the yellowish field in my photo on the left. If you go west along the Cleveland Way from Skinningrove you will reach the obvious rough grassland field on the left.
