I'd argue it's sci-fi. Even though it's got ghosts in it. They're Ghosts. But they're...Of Mars.

I can imagine the battles you fought with yourself over this decision, as I remember going through similar. Leaving academia took me longer than it should have, but I found a very unexpected alternative career, and have never looked back. I'm sure you will forge yourself a great new path!

Ok, time for a thread about what I saw yesterday at #CrystalPalace. As you can see, just about everything has been repaired and re-painted, and in places (like the previously misidentified Xiphodon) re-positioned. It looks fantastic and you have to check it out, even if you've visited before...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: It is so sad that AI has made so many people this doubtful that humans can be creative or talented or interesting. What do they think we used to do before AI? Where do they think AI is getting all its information from in the first place?

Today I learned that Disk-winged Bats evolved suction cups for their arms and legs.

Am happy to say that #SVPCA 2026 >is< happening: a one-day event, 10th September, at the Uni. of Southampton. Registration opens very soon so, if you're on the SVPCA mailing list or FB group, expect details imminently. I'll post links etc. here too. For now, here's the shiny new conference logo...
A menagerie of prehistoric animals in the SVPCA 2026 logo. Always fearful that someone is upset that their research group is neglected in conference logos, this includes representatives of everything we usually cover at these meetings. (I bet I still forgot something!) All silhouettes come from my paintings.

One of the saddest things about the spread of AI imagery is that so many people now seem to assume that a human being couldn't possibly create something cool. They think that now there's an 'easy' way to do 'art', that everyone is doing that, and real artists somehow no longer exist. Bizarre.

Was amazed to find a Harris hawk visiting the garden this morning, presumably a lost pet. It hung around for 20 minutes or so, making low-energy efforts at the neighbour's quail pen. No interest in our chickens.

Magpies have been secretly building a nest in the neighbour's tree. Can you spot it? It's so well disguised.
A narrow conifer tree with the mother of all magpie nests - a tangle of long sticks and twigs - sticking rudely from the top.

For UK viewers, that blue colour in the background is what the sky looks like behind clouds.

This is one of many content scraping pages we have tried* blocking in the Paleontology Facebook group. There's simply no excuse for not crediting researchers and artists, and we'd rather have the original source. *I say tried, because the group tools for blocking pages on FB are terrible!

News on #SVPCA, a (mostly) UK-based annual meeting devoted to vertebrate palaeontology. Things have been quiet about the meeting for the last 18 months, but a team of us are working to pick up where we left off. More details to follow ASAP, hopefully very soon. #FossilFriday #paleontology #fossil
For those who struggle to read from graphics, here's the wording in plain text:

"After a year off in 2025 and a period of silence, organisers of recent SVPCA have met with other interested parties to discuss future symposia, including provisional plans for a meeting in late August or early September 2026.

More details to follow very soon."
