An otter has been spotted in the Bronx River for the first time in over 100 years. Wildlife officials say it could be a sign that New York's polluted waterways are beginning to recover some of their ecological health and biodiversity.

The ko’ko’ /Guam rail once numbered in the tens of thousands. An invasive brown tree snake, likely a WWII-era stowaway, wiped it out in the wild down to 21 birds by 1987. Biologists captured them all.Captive breeding worked:in 2019, it became only the 2nd bird ever to recover from extinct-in-the-wild.

The monarchs in your yard now are the “super generation” — born in reproductive diapause, bound for Mexico, 3,000 miles away. Help them through October: leave goldenrod & native asters, stop pesticide/herbicide use, leave milkweed until frost, and skip tropical milkweed in the South. 🦋

Those big white webs at branch tips right now? Fall webworms — not a tree killer. They feed late season, after trees already stored next year’s energy. Don’t burn them (hurts the tree). If you must, tear the web with a stick — predators do the rest. #Nature #Webworms

In 2022, Taipei pharmacist Eric Cho photographed a 1mm blue mushroom on iNaturalist. Mycologists later described it as *Mycena subcyanocephala*, one of the smallest mushrooms known. It grows on decaying wood in Taiwan. Its discovery is a reminder: even familiar forests may hold unnamed species.

Wildlife–vehicle collisions cost the US $8–10B a year, kill ~200 people and over 1M large animals. Crossings with fencing cost $5–15M, but Banff’s 44 crossings cut collisions by 80% and paid for themselves through avoided damage and injuries. They save lives, protect wildlife and can repay their cost.

In 1975, there were 13 Puerto Rican parrots left on Earth. Every one of them lived in a single patch of rainforest on a 35-mile-long island. The species had fallen from an estimated million birds when Columbus arrived in 1493. Five centuries of deforestation, hunting, and habitat loss

Pokeweed is one of our most productive wildlife plants. Dozens of bird species eat the berries, including cardinals, mockingbirds, catbirds, cedar waxwings, robins, bluebirds, mourning doves, flickers, and thrushes.

House wrens and Carolina wrens are among the most fearless, resourceful, and ecologically useful birds you can have in a yard. They eat beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, ants, flies, and spiders, feeding their chicks almost entirely on insects from the moment they hatch.
