WIP Wednesday. Working on something new, and feeling Hong'er feelings.

It was much quieter than in the hallway, and that was oddly calming. But not as calming as the sight of his favourite teacher marking homework at his desk.

Xie Laoshi didn't even look up from the papers when he asked, "What happened this time?"

Hua Cheng passed through the rows of seats, reaching Xie Laoshi's desk and placing his detention slip on the wooden finish, along with the flower. "They started it." Hua Cheng kept his eyes trained on the desk, afraid to see the disappointment in his favourite teacher's eyes. "They were making fun of me because I can't go on the school trip next week."

It wasn't a new situation. Unless the trips were free for students, Hua Cheng could almost never afford it. If he had enough notice, he'd try to scrounge up the change for it, but it wasn't always worth the risk of getting caught. It was just another thing that isolated him from everyone else. It made him different. It made him less. That had always been enough for the other kids to latch onto and exploit.

Hua Cheng watched as Xie Laoshi picked up the slip, reading it. He finally looked at Hua Cheng, a warmth in his golden eyes that Hua Cheng didn't deserve. "Who threw the first punch?"

Hua Cheng clenched his jaw, knowing the answer to that question would be damning. "They make me so mad. They don't know—"

"Hong'er," Xie Laoshi's voice was gentle, yet firm. "Who threw the first punch?"

"…Me," Hua Cheng begrudgingly admitted, hanging his head and kicking his foot against the floor.

"We've talked about using our words, not our fists, haven't we?" Xie Laoshi pointed out, no judgement in his voice, only concern.

"They don't listen. And they don't let me walk away, either," Hua Cheng added, predicting Xie Laoshi's next suggestion.

After a moment of quiet contemplation, Xie Laoshi asked, "Are you hurt? Do I need to take you to the infirmary?"

Hua Cheng smiled. Xie Laoshi was the only one who had asked that question. "I'm fine."
