I spent the last few years wrapping my head around how EU policymaking works. And yet, when asked 'So, what did you find?', I was not sure how to explain it. I thus went back to my notes and put together a few unsystematic takeaways in a little reseach brief: 🔻 zenodo.org/records/2288...

The more time I spend on it, the more I feel LinkedIn is just an upgrade (in terms of technological support, not quality) of self-help books you could find at service stations – except that everyone is now contributing to it, on a daily basis.

We once imagined education was about teaching objective facts to the next generation. But in today's polarised world, education has become a fierce political battleground. The left pushes post-colonial readings of history, critical race theory, and gender studies. On the right, Trump has threatened to remove billions in funding from top universities over their DEl programmes, including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. PEN America calculated that since 2021, 22,810 books have been banned in US schools. More recently, in 2025, political commentator Charlie Kirk was assassinated while giving a speech at a university campus. What our children and young people learn, and how they learn it, has become the stage of international debate and controversy.

wow, no way education is not about teaching objective facts but socialising people to ideas – that's crazy no one has ever thought of education as an arena for politics, seriously in times of moral decay we are crossing the line, it's outrageous

As I keep saying: Because no matter what abusers take from their victims, they don't want to take the blame. And one of the prerogatives of power is to be in charge of blame, and abusers routinely exercise that power to make their own acts someone else's fault.

Here's a crazy suggestion: what if, instead of saying 'oh no, someone should stop it', our (sigh!) political leadership - from the US Congress to the European capitals – actually took action.

Denying use of bases it's an unreasonable escalation. Especially in light of the US's tireless efforts to ease the tension by announcing (with a genocidal undertone) that they'll tear down Iran's civilian infrastructures – incidentally, also a key energy source for half the EU.

To be fair, the whole 'sole authority' bullshit is something that in an even vaguely democratic country would have never existed for starters.

It's Hannah Arendt all over, but all our talks about complexity appear so silly in the face of the reality of things. It's so disappointing seeing how annoyingly banal the individual actions and decisions contributing to trigger the chain of events that brought us here are.

Actually, the Greens' percentages are way more interesting than Reform's. We have had plenty of cases and explanations of why right-wing populists are appealing for low-income voters. But what about the Greens. I am not familiar with the UK party landscape, is there some obvious reason for this?

Agreed. Pragmatism, the kind that drives enhanced cooperation-style integration, pretends to solve the problem of consensus by ignoring it. In its name, we have been delaying this normative debate, bc 'it's not the right moment, let's agree on this in the meantime'. But the issue's still there.

Absolutely! Short-term subsidies are necessary relief for low-income households in this context, but without system improvements (which pass by decarbonisation) that do little to help vulnerable households out of energy poverty.

It's more about poorly insulated houses and inefficient heating systems than cold places. Problem is that average energy bills are almost the same, in absolute numbers, across income groups (www.iea.org/data-and-sta...). Interesting notes on indicators: energy-poverty.ec.europa.eu/observatory/...

Actually, that was not a threat. She was defending her support so far for Trump by saying 'the Atlantic alliance is our place to be. What is the alternative strategy, shutting down bases, cutting trade...'. She wasn't presenting these as potential courses of action but as an unrealistic strategy.
130
giuseppe cannata @giuseppec98.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
Absolutely, that's it. And those being sacrificed are often the end users (us) who end up with crazy bills on the table. (for instance, here's the cost of electricity in Italy, where 2/3 of electricity is gas-based and countries with way higher share of renewables in their energy mix)
010
giuseppe cannata @giuseppec98.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
At this point, it isn't even about climate change anymore. Here in Europe it's ever more evident – despite fossil industry lobbying – that the transition is a matter of basic access and security, with Russia's war first and the Hormuz crisis now exposing how insecure fossil-based energy mixes are)

Ironic how, after all the talk about national sovereignty in the past decade or so across Europe, the only ones actually defending it are at the other end of the political spectrum from those who define themselves as 'sovereigntist'. Unsurprising, but grimly ironic.

I came across this FT article on #NoKings and I just find the photo hilarious. A perfect allegory, with the bodyguards – aka religion – escorting the true gods of corporate America, and the largely unheard, the people, carrying around this parade float, simulacrum of the system that failed them.

Riarmo significa riarmo nazionale e export indiscriminato.

This is the kind of lucid takes we need – about feminism and the hard times we live through too. The time where we had the luxury of thinking in dichotomies is over. Saying a fight is lost is not realism, but has real consequences: it enforces a narrative of defeat, which serves only the 'winners'.

To have a voice means not just the animal capacity to utter sounds but the ability to participate fully in the conversations that shape your society, your relations to others, and your own life. There are three key things that matter in having a voice: audibility, credibility, and consequence.

Academia is based on an incentive system that rewards exactly what AI allows to do: publishing as many articles as quickly as possible, with the only safeguard of quality being unpaid reviewers labour. AI slop is just precipitating the collapse this system was, rightfully, doomed to. 2/

A staggering number of articles of this type 'reviewer x finds AI-generated fake citations' and yet most fail to see the problem AI exposes. One can also think that researchers are getting lazy, and there's clearly an issue of research ethics here. Yet, the problem, is once again systemic. 1/

Still stands. Behaviour or conduct can be illegal, not people as such. 'Illegal alien' presupposes a criminal act that determines a person's status, but irregular enter or stay is usually an administrative infraction, not a crime, produced by unfair migration rules.
