Come giustamente ha detto la mia collega nella nostra chat di lavoro, «Ma sempre a #Ferragosto?» #eruzioni #eruzione #Etna #MtEtna
Attività termica sull'Etna vista da SEVIRI nelle ultime 24 ore.

Here we go again … #Etna #eruption
Plot of the radiative power from Mt Etna as detected from MSG SEVIRI with our HOTSAT algorithm. There has been a huge spike (peaking at 10GW) late yesterday evening, and it's still going strong even if decreasing over time (down to 6GW)

Of course the cat decided to occupy the other chair today
Cat comfortably laying on the other red chair. No sign this time.

It's a bit early for #caturday but I just found out that at the CUS (university sports center) offices they have an armchair reserved for the local cat and I thought the Fediverse would like this piece of information.
A cat resting on a low red chair. Somebody has taped a piece of paper to the backrest, with the drawing of a cat and the text «SI PREGA DI NON DISTURBARE IL GATTO QUANDO DORME» (please do not disturb the cat when it's sleeping)

As someone who has always been working with #SmoothedParticleHydrodynamics, I have a diminished capacity for amazement at the level of detail an #SPH simulation can achieve. I still can't deny that the simulations look good though, and I can understand why […] [Original post on fediscience.org]

People don't believe me when I say that volcanoes only erupt during vacations. So anyway. Guess what me and my colleagues are doing right now. #MtEtna #Etna #eruption #volcanology #remoteSensing #SEVIRI
Last 30 days of hermal flux rates observed on Mt Etna from SEVIRI. There are huge peaks right after Christmas and around New Year's.

Having Just Realized™ that I can use Sphere Glyphs to render my particles in #ParaView, I am now Very Happy™ because my low-resolution #SPH simulations can be made to appear so much nicer. #SmoothedParticleHydrodynamics #CFD #ComputationalFluidDynamics #rendering #visualization
Cross section of the SPHERIC 2 test case, with each SPH particle rendered as an appropriately-sized sphere. The test case at 0.5 seconds: the water has just reached the obstacles, creating a splash.

[Original post on fediscience.org]

Tutti i voli portano a Roma

Yesterday was the last day of #SPHERIC2025. Huge thanks to the local organizing committee for their hard (mostly behind the scenes) work, and all the #SPHERIC community for the enjoyable #conference and #unconference. A special thanks goes to Corrado Altomare […] [Original post on fediscience.org]
Corrado Altomare delivering his speech of hope during the closing address of the 19th SPHERIC World Conference (SPHERIC 2025). Behind him a projected side with a world map, with dots on the cities where the participants came from. There are dots from all continents except Antarctica. The text reads:

(top) Science should build bridges, not borders.

(bottom) Collaboration is our strongest form of resistance.

130 participants | 27 countries | 1 community

Let's keep this spirit alive — beyond these walls.

Vacation season is starting early this year #Etna #eruption
Mt Etna eruption. A huge white plume has emerged from the summit craters, and extends several kilometers into the sky.About 1hr later, the plume is higher and has spread out. A new ash-gray plume is growing next to it

These models work surprisingly well. Despite the massive simplifications, they are still able to predict with astonishing accuracy the lava flow paths, emplacement extents and even the timing. Due to some miraculous balance, at the scale at which we do our […] [Original post on fediscience.org]

I've been to Rome (and back) to present our results to the stakeholders. They were very well received, and we got a lot of suggestions on other things to look into. Very nice meeting. I had to take every single mass transit option to get there: plane, train […] [Original post on fediscience.org]
A fluffy sea of white clouds lit by the sun, taken from a plane window. The wing is visible. If you zoom in towards the middle of the photo you can see the top of Mt Etna emerging from the clouds. Smoke is coming out, flattened by the wind.Similar to the previous photo, but at a different angle.

When this post mastodon.social/@coreyspowell/11380… by @coreyspowell popped up in my feed just now my first thought was: «wait, I'm pretty sure I saw something similar at a recent #SPHERIC conference» so of course I checked the linked […] [Original post on fediscience.org]
A figure from the linked article, showing SPH simulations of the possible impacts on Uranus that have led to it having such a tilted axis. There are 16 snapshots, at higher resolution going left to right, and different times going top to bottom.
