Looking for shops that offer refills for detergents & cleaning products, or switching to soap and shampoo bars and other plastic-free products is also a good way to reduce needless plastic.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
As consumers, we need to become more mindful of what we choose to buy and strive to limit our plastic consumption. We can choose loose fruits and vegetables at the supermarket and buy more in small shops, which tend to use less packaging.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
Moreover, each time we recycle we lose material & often quality, so that we are effectively downcycling rather than recycling. If plastic bottles are made into synthetic fabrics that end up in landfill at the end of their life span, the problem has been delayed, not solved.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
We tend to think of recycling as the solution to our plastic problems, but that’s not necessarily the case. Plastic needs to be sorted & clean to be recycled, and the enormous variety of polymers and additives that constitute ‘plastics’ can make the process tricky.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
It's not a given that bioplastics, once produced, are more environmentally friendly than traditional plastics: most bioplastics end up in landfill. Designing bioplastics that are biodegradable & recyclable, and establishing a circular economy, has to be a priority.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
Bioplastics are entering the market, but simply re-creating the properties of traditional plastics will make it hard for them to become mainstream, as they compete with cheap, established products. The real opportunity lies in designing bioplastics with new, superior properties.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
Bioplastics are a sustainable alternative to plastics: they are made from biomass rather than petrochemical feedstock. However, bio-derived does not automatically mean sustainable.
100
Giulia Pacchioni @giulia-pacc.bsky.social · 21/02/2022
But where does most plastic waste come from? Packaging is the biggest culprit: globally, in 2015 we threw away 146 tonnes of plastic packaging, 96.6% of which wasn’t recycled. That’s a lot of waste (and loss of value) for a product with a usage lifetime as short as a few hours!
