95-98% of the material from a spent battery can be recycled and made into new batteries. Currently making EV batteries does generate pollution from mining and refining but at term, most of the materials would be cycling back into production leading to an even cleaner solution than it currently is

Why would battery hardware be any more likely to come loose than ICE component hardware? I could agree that 2022 is a bit too recent to trace broad conclusions with regards to battery degradation but then again ICE cars have far more potential failure points in engines and drive train than EVs.

99.7% of EVs will never need a battery replacement. Petrolheads can keep parroting “what about the battery?” all day. The real-world data says otherwise. Tracking thousands of EVs built since 2022: Just 0.3% have needed a battery replacement (outside recalls). That’s 99.7% still running fine.

Makes sense in a way. Have less experienced workers haul the 'new' old washer, hook it up and bring back the broken one to a shop where a skilled tradie can refurbish multiple in a day to sell to the next clients. Spare parts and tools stay in the shop and you don't waste the guy's time on travel

I would argue that on top of the algorithms, the world is also objectively worse than it was for us. Can we blame kids that grow up watching us rip their futures out from under them where AI undercuts their careers, home ownership is a mirage and climate change keeps accelerating for being unhappy?

My hottest “I have no data to back this up” take is that phones aren’t making young people less happy. What’s making them less happy is living in a world where everyone is having their reality defined by recommendation algorithms that can only care about whether something keeps you watching.

Young adult happiness is falling. Percent of young people who are pretty or very happy has dropped from 88% to 76% over the last 15 years after having held fairly steady between 1980 and 2010
