L’orientalisme peut désigner à la fois un mouvement culturel et artistique et, dans la théorie développée par Edward Saïd, la production d’imaginaires faits d’espaces exotiques, stéréotypés et présentés comme inférieurs, moins développés, par rapport à l’Europe. Dans un cas comme dans l’autre, l’orientalisme a une forte dimension genrée et sexualisée : l’Orient est associé au féminin, à la lascivité et aux sexualités non normatives. En réalité, il n’existe pas un mais plusieurs orientalismes et des femmes ont pris part à leur construction. Ces imaginaires ont pour point commun d’avoir tous participé à la construction des subjectivités sexuelles de la modernité.
