Beside many other things, 9/11 was also the moment that memes became mainstream. I saw the first 9/11 meme 2 days after the attack, and over the next 2 months collected 646 memes such as the one below: >>

Hello sociologists, are you still here? For a public lecture, I'm looking for studies using, debating, criticizing, etc number of books in own/parental household as measure for cultural capital (a measure that never fails to make people smile) Any suggestions, thoughts? References? Objections? LMK!

Hellow fellow academics: in these troubled times, let's cherish academia as a parallel global sphere and community. I felt this strongly during a conference last week, when I introduced my Iranian grad student Narges to Motti, an Isreali sociologist. They met, shook hands and started laughing >>

Havel in is the air. Recently, I found my thoughts turning to Vaclav Havel, the Czech dissident and later president who in the 1970s wrote about his attempts to "live in truth". I reread his books, which I read in the 1980s as a somewhat over-serious teenager, and his biography. >>
