Our (open access) paper with Florencia Montal and María José Urzúa is now out in @bjpols.bsky.social. "Critical Ties" asks why IOs criticize some states and topics and not others. Our answer has lies in which NGOs IO staff have come to trust.

Palestine-Israel and country-specific resolutions are the most fragmented. Rights-based and cooperation topics draw broader coalitions. The BERT model adds Sudan/Central African region (AU bloc vs. Western accountability coalition) and religion/intolerance as polarized clusters.

Topics come from expert coding and from a BERTopic model. The two schemes largely converge, which gives us some confidence in both. Where they diverge, the model recovers divisions that the broader expert categories hide.

To wrap up the term, in my human rights course we analyzed a word cloud generated from our semester’s readings. In a world where institutions are tested daily, these concepts aren’t abstract. They highlight debates over sovereignty, accountability, and the role of nations in a fractured world. 🌐

The findings of our conjoint experiment indicate that both journal attributes and individual characteristics impact the choice of journal, including factors such as language, editorial location, and acceptance rates.

In order to explore this issue, we conducted a study on the submission decisions of Global South scholars. We recruited more than 500 International Relations scholars based in multiple countries across Latin America.

Thanksgiving weekend came with a paper acceptance in International Studies Perspectives 🥳! In this paper, with Florencia Montal & Patricio Yamin, we examined the journal selection strategies employed by IR scholars in the Global South.

The other interesting region (although not competitive) was Asia and the Pacific: 4 seats & 4 candidates. Although all 4 had their place in the Council secured, it’s interesting the different level of support each country received: China was the country with the lowest support of all.
