I love the Guardian photo editor
I'm sorry, it's a visual joke, but I'll try. Headline: Nigel Farage and Count Binface: a visual guide to their careers
Subhed: Farage was elected to EU parliament five times before becoming Clacton MP, while Binface has been less successful - so far.
Caption: Farage (right) resigned and triggered a byelection, with Binface his main rival after the major parties pulled out. Photograph: Henry Nicholls/AFP/Getty Images
The picture is a double, with an image of Farage in a blue suit, his hands in the air and his mouth open, on the right, and an image of Binface with his hands in the air and his mouth open, on the left.

you can join your union, or you can do this other thing, but whatever you do, don't take management's advice about how workers should work
tweet from HoldenShearer @HoldenShearer May 22, 2018
Someone should probably tell the rich that workers banding together to present formal address of grievances is the alternative we worked out a long time ago to breaking down the factory owner's front door and beating him to death in front of his family? I feel like they forgot.

I know everybody who follows me already knows this but this is precisely the same logic as saying trans rights aren't as important as getting rid of whatever Republican. people who aren't subject to a particular axis of oppression are often grimly willing to let that go for a candidate they like.
Independent Human (Chuck): I loosely supported him only because I wasn't convinced a tattoo was enough to make him invalid and hearing women claim he abused them with no evidence sounds like typical politics. But if this woman has evidence then by all means he needs to drop out. I just wanted a chance to get rid of Collins.

augh, first Bsky down, then realizing @faineg.bsky.social is out of town - where are my Alf hog jokes about the AI slop cumgutter alien Trump perp walk? (possibly the first time in human history those words have been arranged in that sentence)
a Donald J Trump post from Truth Social with an AI-generated image (with fingertips partly blocking the "lens") of Trump, a bunch of Secret Service agents, a guy in desert camo, and a big-headed grey alien manacled at wrist and ankle. The group is walking across concrete in front of a hangar, with some sand-coloured vehicles in the background. In the far background are a low-slung sand-coloured building and sandy hills. The grey alien is very lean, with cut abs and iliac furrows. Its groin and feet are featureless.

A clip from The Guardian coverage. The headline is "LA teen loses eye after being shot by US agent at No Kings march, lawyer says" and the subhed is "USC student Tucker Collins' attorney accuses homeland security of 'overt act of repression' at Los Angeles protest."
The article opens, "A freshman at the University of Southern California has lost an eye after he was shot last month with a 'less-lethal' projective by a Department of Homeland Security agent at a No-Kings march, according to his attorney."
The article is illustrated by a picture with a bit of the US flag in the foreground, the midpoint of the picture is gas flowing out of a canister and in the background are several helmeted and masked figures in black uniforms. The figures are standing behind a black chainlink fence and some concrete bollards.

A screenshot from The Guardian reading, "The Campbelltown station commuter car park designed by Hill Thalis Architecture + Urban Projects, is more than mere infrastructure for cars, the Australian Institute of Architects’ judges concluded. The project, winner of one of three awards in the built outcomes category, is a generous, resilient, and unexpectedly uplifting example of civic design. A little bit of paradise regained.
"It’s as if the architects decided that the Campbelltown project was a chance to inject a dose of civic dignity into a structure that, in the usual hierarchy of urban needs, sits somewhere just above a sewage treatment plant."
The last half of the last sentence is highlighted.

On President’s Day, the First Amendment Troop staged “ResistDance” — a tribute and act of artistic dissent — at the Lincoln Memorial, followed by a guerrilla performance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Created by the advocacy arm of hungryman Productions, led by Bryan Buckley, with Tony Award-winning choreographer Mathew Steffens, the piece honored Renée Good and Alex Pretti.

Twenty-two dancers performed, representing the 22 days between Good and Pretti’s deaths. The Lincoln Memorial ResistDance was peaceful. The Kennedy Center performance was shut down within seconds by more officers than dancers (23 vs. 22.)

The action coincided with the Federal Bureau of Investigation denying access to information in the Pretti investigation, underscoring the campaign’s call for transparency.

Florence King explains how authors of porn books "start writing less and less bigger and bigger on more and more paper - Fucky Fudging." The passage below starts, "(This) is why porn characters, who show no caution in life's larger moments, always read labels with such meticulous scrutiny:"
K-Y JELLY
It's also what makes them staccato, monosyllabic types with that curious tendency to echolalia that runs through the genre. The more they repeat themselves, pause, think, and start over, the more paragraphs you can indent:

She's a natural blonde, he thought.
A _real_ natural blonde.
Was she ever!
"Wow," he breathed, as he started at her pussy.
There was no mistaking it.
No way!
"Honey," he said, "you're a real natural blonde."

For the same reason, they also interrupt themselves, trail off in the middle of sentences, and drop things:

Brad wondered if ...
No, no, she couldn't possibly want to be bungholed.
And yet ...
She knelt down and spread her cheeks.
"Margo," he said, "I-"
The drink slipped out of his hand and crashed to the floor when he saw the jar she had brought from the bathroom:

Fede Galizia's Judith with the Head of Holofernes, 1596; two white women stand before a red drapery. The woman in the foreground (Judith) has rosy cheeks , a straight nose, and brown eyes. She wears a dark velvet cap trimmed in pearls over her wavy auburn hair, and two strands of pearls around her neck. Her dress is blue and gold brocade over a translucent white blouse. She holds the head of a bearded man (Holofernes) by the hair. Her older handmaid, supports the head, which is no longer attached to his body, from beneath, using a metal tray. The handmaid, gazing at Judith from the shadows, stands with the first finger of the hand not holding the tray to her lips. I use a closeup of the handmaid for my profile pic.

this is well and good, I guess, but if they're going easier on 4chan than on YouTube ... and also many "mainstream" companies are cheerfully signing on bc it gives them pretext to hoover up even more, and mainly adults', data.
Inman Grant said the focus of the under-16s ban was “mainstream” social media sites “that a lot of children were using and spending a lot of time and being exposed to addictive design features like opaque algorithms and endless scroll”.

“I would consider 4chan one of the darker sites on the web. These are things that we do deal with through both our phase-one and now soon our phase-two codes, but also through our illegal and restricted content scheme, because that’s where a lot of terrible content sits.”

another update that I didn't see in the thread: a bit of a price change. (also I love the otherworldly light in this picture, where literally no two shadows are the same proportionate length and direction, never mind appropriate to the twilight suggested by the sunset sky behind the house)
I really can't explain the joy of this Zillow listing for 25380 Coral Canyon Rd, Corona, CA, I apologize, but what I meant to emphasize here is that the price has dropped by about 500K, to 589K. Also this picture is shopped in some way that means there is a huge set of shadows from a tree in the front yard, no shadow from a prominent streetlamp, and short shadows from the edge of the house that are from a completely different angle than the tree shadows. None of the shadows are consistent with the pink-and-gold sunset sky behind the house.

to be fair the actual SkyWhale is even genderyer
How to describe the nightmare that is Patricia Piccinini's Skywhale? Well, it's an extremely large hot-air balloon with a grey-blue back and rosy-pink underside, with five dangling pink breasts on each side of its torso (about where wings or arms would sit). It has a forked tail with scalloped edges, and its face has two small eyes, with brows, and a large mouth running between. In this picture, Skywhale's basket is still on the ground, in a grassy field next to a white truck and some people; the light is crepuscular. The sky is mostly clear apart from some cloud near the horizon at the left of the picture, and in the background are a few trees.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

(None of this is true, ChatGPT is not sentient and has no feelings, and it cannot be anxious or mindful; it can, however, present language representing those constructs, plagiarized from very large datasets, in response to prompts.)

deadnaming trans people is deliberate, and the cruelty is the point. it binds together laughing abusers and reminds the victims that they are powerless and will not be protected by the law. Serwer missed trans kids here bc Trump et al had not yet cottoned to what perfect victims they'd be.
This isn't incoherent. It reflects a clear principle: Only the president and his allies, his supporters, and their anointed are entitled to the rights and protections of the law, and if necessary, immunity from it. The rest of us are entitled only to cruelty, by their whim. This is how the powerful have ever kept the powerless divided and in their place, and enriched themselves in the process. (Adam Serwer, 2018, The Atlantic)Trump's only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty. It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, black voters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright. The president's ability to execute that cruelty through word and deed makes them euphoric. It makes them feel good, it makes them feel proud, it makes them feel happy, it makes them feel united. And as long as he makes them feel that way, they will let him get away with anything, no matter what it costs them. (Adam Serwer, 2018, The Atlantic)
