I don’t know why a version of this story gets telegraphed every six months. I don’t know why people scoff or find it objectionable and invariably the real story is never one about censorship. It’s a case of giving people information. It’s actually about being aware of trauma that isn’t your own.

Recently, a photograph surfaced of my godmother and grand aunt, Aggie Martin. It made me think about the quiet ways women shape who we become, often without knowing it. #InternationalWomensDay
Picture of my grand aunt in fancy outfit

An Old Photograph

Sifting through fancy stones, pearls,
and scarves of varied hue,
I rarely think of the past
or the imprints it left.

When I think of you
it is a kind smile,
a warm touch,
endless days visiting old ladies,
sweets in tins,
the hum of local news.

Then a photograph appears.
Opulence and style
amidst peering eyes
defiant against rosaries, rain,
and the tyranny of McQuaid.

She lived where the Angelus
divided the day.

But in this photograph
there is a fierceness,
a queerness,
a refusal of the life prescribed
and a glimpse of the life
that might have been.

Aggie Martin was a lady,
I am told.
But this lady?

Unwilling to shrink,
to settle,
to be bound.
It is something
a four-year-old boy
could not have seen,
yet something
that lingered.

I thought my fondness for hats
came from a grandad.
And maybe it did.

But the fierceness,
the defiance,
the queerness,
the style.

I know now
came from you.
