Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

How sovereignty has become a calculated issue-by-issue choice
Sovereignty should be on the minds of most Australians, but it’s not – mostly because politicians don’t want it there.

Pearls and Irritations @johnmenadue.com · 20/08/2026
If the RBA only reaches for the hammer of interest rates when inflation rises, it risks treating every problem like a nail. Australia needs targeted policies that address the actual causes of inflation — from profiteering and energy prices to supply constraints, Mark Diesdendorf writes.

Fighting inflation without making inequality worse
Interest rates are a blunt tool for tackling inflation, and can hurt the people least able to absorb higher costs.

According to Bullock, interest rates don’t impact our cost of living. So I’ll just go to my money tree and harvest some more to cover it.

What the af?? How could potentially hundreds of dollars extra in expenses every month not affect cost of living? Why would banks even assess borrowing capacity if that were true?

Will Australia be taken for a ride in the AI and data centre boom?
More than $150 billion is lined up for data centre development and investment in Australia, but there are questions as to whether the boom will provide benefits beyond a short-term construction boost.

The rise of a political organisation with no policy framework and an appeal based solely on disgruntlement and prejudice says nothing good about routine politics … but perhaps more importantly the political media’s determination to report politics as reality TV.

I think you’re right. I doubt there’s any good way to actually pay individuals for their slice of any AI response. And that ignores the training data. UBI feels like right response given the clear risk of mass unemployment coupled with their profiting from collective knowledge.

Giles Brunning @gilesb.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
These companies should not get their raw materials for nothing. That’s just the position of tech bros who think they’re entitled to massive wealth off the back of society. We should be demanding a fair return for the raw materials we provide. If you can’t make a profit in that scenario, too bad!

To all of us who contribute to the collective intelligence machine. Now, I’m not sure whether paying individual creators works at scale. Maybe it does, or maybe it needs to be something like a UBI to recognise that we all contribute to these things. But, what I know for sure is that…

Those raw materials. But that tech doesn’t work without the inputs that we all contribute to. So, it’s ok for tech companies to take a significant cut of any profits that might exist—obviously once all the real costs have been taken into account, including environmental costs. But a fee is owed…

I’ve never heard this so perfectly articulated. In a weird way this has parallels with the gas tax debate in Australia. AI uses the collective knowledge of the whole world as its raw material. Yes, the AI companies invest in tech and infrastructure to process… www.facebook.com/share/v/1EVM...
