It was an absolute joy to be together, honoring those who have served our country. This event would not have been possible without the support and partnership of our local community organizations, who are dedicated to giving back and committed to Veterans. 🌟

I am grateful to my colleagues who fought for these provisions and rightfully acknowledged this moment to obtain something positive from one of the worst deals made by a previous administration.

The City of Chicago should utilize every tool at its disposal to chip away and reclaim the parking meters for our city. This is not the end, but it is a step in the right direction.

✅ $75 million up front for our pensions ✅ 5% profit share from the annual net income ($367 million over 57 years) ✅ 2% of the sale price if sold again in the future ❌ Vendor cut business ties with DHS ❌ Firm will not sell driver data to third parties

Given this opportunity, with a new seller interested, it was crucial to use our leverage to get a better deal for the City of Chicago; this included ⬇️

Yesterday, the City Council voted 46-3 on the adjusted parking meter deal. The original 2008 deal to sell our meters, prior to my tenure and many of my colleagues', was one of the worst deals ever made.

Earlier this week, the City Council passed an expansion of the Veteran Enterprise Business (VBE) program. This legislation expands the city departments that Veteran-owned businesses and contractors can do business with.

When housing supply doesn’t keep up with demand, families feel it in their rent and home prices. Building more housing across our city can help create more options and put downward pressure on housing costs.

I believe we can protect tenants while not hindering housing development. Those two issues are not exclusive to one another, but rather part of the same ecosystem. Renters need housing, and vice versa; neither is available without investment.

Gilbert Villegas @gilbertv36.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The policy path we follow must address the root causes of the affordability crisis - our lack of available housing.
100
Gilbert Villegas @gilbertv36.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The City of Chicago needs to build, build, build. Incentivizing growth will lead to more development, housing, and ultimately - when supply meets demand - increased affordability. Illinois is second to last in new housing construction, only ahead of Alaska.

Ald. Gilbert Villegas: Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Protecting Renters Ordinance will raise costs for renters
The majority of Chicago residents are renters. Why would we want to raise the cost of living for the majority of our constituents?

“As we have seen on a federal level, where the administration claimed other countries and businesses would pay the cost of increased tariffs, the reality is everyday consumers had to foot the bill.”

“PRO does not make housing more affordable for renters; it actually does the opposite. Even with the amendments recently announced, PRO remains a rent-increase ordinance that will raise costs for tenants across Chicago.”
