Hmmm, yard sales as the name implies are usually events where money is changing hands. So it's not really gifthood material. 🤔

Automated moderation tools, which are generally quite resource-hungry, will be first in line. A small amount might go towards some marketing and outreach efforts for the Portland and Seattle pilots.

This grant will give the platform the financial support to keep the servers running for a good while and some room to add additional resources as Gifthood grows.

Some good news: the team at @bsky.app just awarded Gifthood a $2,000 AT Protocol grant. Thank you, sincerely. It means a lot that the people building the open network believe in what we're trying to do to build stronger connections among neighbors.

Yes. That’s on the list to check out. Would be nice to find legal help to give guidance. It’s on the wish list.

Our application to a fiscal sponsor was rejected. It’s fine. We’ll figure things out without their help.

New_ Public’s @blaine.bsky.social reveals to @rabble.nz how Twitter was almost decentralized — like Bluesky or Mastodon — way back in 2008. Nearly 20 years later, Blaine is now the Head Engineer of Roundabout, our local community app, where he's helping us create a better social media.

Good morning. Notifications have gotten a bit of a sprucing up, as we say around here 🌲. You now have fine-grained control over what the app may bug you with and what should go unnotified. Find it under Settings → Notification Settings
Gifthood.community notification settings page. A 'Notify me on this device' toggle is off, while a master 'Allow notifications' toggle is on. Below it, individual toggles for Messages, Interest in your listings, New followers, Notes on your listings, Exchange updates, and New listings nearby are all on. A distance selector for nearby listings is set to 'Same as my feed (within ~5 km),' with options for ~1.2 km and ~5 km.

Congratulations to @brittanyellich.com on her first month at Bluesky. Gifthood is actively (as time allows) participating in Atmospheric Groups on Atproto, as I feel this will be an important aspect for many future participants in a healthy mutual aid platform that Gifthood strives to become.

Gifthood — an open gifting community
Neighbors giving freely. Free things, offered and asked for by the people who live near you, on an open network you actually own. No money, no marketplace, no catch.

Lending is a possibility too. The use case already fits. So many ways to slice and dice this idea.

gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 04/07/2026
In the meantime, neighbors that feel the need for more obfuscation can always create a pseudonymous account that doesn’t directly link to any other personas on the net. Exact locations and addresses are never shown or stored in public.

gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 04/07/2026
With that being said. Permissible spaces are coming to atproto soon. Once that happens I will take a close look as to which parts of Gifthood will use this to privacy guard more.

Yes, I think about this all the time. I have built in a lot of trust and safety affordances. Mute, block, report is all there. However that does not entirely solve for some privacy concerns that some fold might have. The other platforms aren’t really providing protections either.

I don't know if it'll work. Nobody knows if anything will work; that's what makes it interesting. But the mechanism is honest, and when the mechanism is honest, you find out the truth either way.

gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
And no money! Not a nickel. The moment money shows up, it's a marketplace, and a marketplace already exists, and it's terrible at making friends. What we're really moving around isn't ladders anyway. It's excuses to knock on a door.
280
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
We index it; we never own it. If our index burns down tomorrow, nothing is lost. You replay the announcements and build it again. The people keep their stuff, and they keep their data about their stuff. That's the physics of it.
140
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
So here's the trick, and it's a nice trick. Everybody keeps their own records ("I've got a ladder, come take it") in a place they control. Then all we build is the thing that listens: it watches these little announcements go by and assembles a picture of the neighborhood out of them.
150
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
They start putting ads next to your free ladder, they sell your address to somebody, and one day they get bored and shut it off and the whole thing evaporates. That's not a neighborhood, that's a company with a neighborhood-shaped front on it. I don't trust it, and you shouldn't either.
160
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
And information problems, well, those we know how to work on. Now, the obvious answer is: make a website, put everything in a big database, done. But wait a minute. Then whoever owns the database owns the neighborhood.
140
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
So I got to wondering: what's the actual problem here? It's not a stuff problem. There's plenty of stuff, just look in anybody's garage. It's an information problem. Nobody knows what anybody else has, or needs, or is willing to part with. That's it! That's the whole thing.
140
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
Multiply that by every house on the street and you've got a warehouse of idle stuff, and everybody's broke, and nobody knows anybody.
150
gifthood.org @gifthood.org · 03/07/2026
You know, it's a funny thing. My neighbor has a ladder. I need a ladder maybe twice a year. So what did I do? I bought a ladder. Now there are two ladders sitting in two garages, doing nothing, forty feet apart.
