Gifthood was just upgraded to a new, shiny, beautiful basemap, courtesy of maptoolkit.org.
Screenshot of the gifthood.community web app in a browser, showing a two-column layout. The left column is a listings feed with a top nav (Nearby, Activity, My posts, Messages), a location selector reading "Mississippi · Portland, OR," and a Post button. Filter controls include All, Offers, Requests, Borrow, a Hide categories dropdown, a ~5 km radius selector, and a Newest sort. Under the heading "From neighbors you follow" are four offer cards, each with a photo, an OFFER label, an Available status pill, a title, neighborhood and distance details, a category tag, and the poster's name: "Headphones and speaker" (Arbor Lodge, ~3 km, Electronics, Jacob Hoopes), "Pokemon cards" (Mississippi, <1 km, Hobbies & Crafts, RalphBo), "Universal license plate mount" (Tools & Hardware, RalphBo), and "Minecraft lamp" (Baby & Kids, RalphBo).

The right column shows a new light-toned street basemap of north and northeast Portland, Oregon, rendered by Maptoolkit with OpenStreetMap data. Neighborhood labels such as Portsmouth, Kenton, Arbor Lodge, Overlook, Boise, Alameda, Pearl District, and Buckman are visible, along with the Willamette and Columbia rivers and highlighted freeways. Several dashed rectangles with colored dots mark approximate listing locations rather than exact addresses. A "Drag to explore" button floats at the top of the map.

I have received a Gifthood member report that desktop push notifications are not working in the Brave browser. This is a Brave browser privacy feature. If you would like to receive push notifications, you have to turn on "Use Google services for push messaging" under Privacy and security.
Brave Browser's "Privacy and security" settings page. A magenta arrow and text reading "This needs to be toggled on" point to the "Use Google services for push messaging" option, which is currently switched off.

I just added a little bit more privacy shielding. You can now elect to have your content not show up on the public-facing surfaces. Only logged-in users will be able to see your profile and listings.
A privacy setting card under a 'PRIVACY' section heading. The setting is titled 'Discourage apps from showing my account to logged-out users,' with description text reading: 'gifthood won't show your profile, listings, hands, or notes to visitors who aren't signed in. Other apps may not honor this request. This does not make your account private.' A toggle switch on the right is in the off position.

Good morning. Notifications have gotten a bit of a sprucing up, as we say around here 🌲. You now have fine-grained control over what the app may bug you with and what should go unnotified. Find it under Settings → Notification Settings
Gifthood.community notification settings page. A 'Notify me on this device' toggle is off, while a master 'Allow notifications' toggle is on. Below it, individual toggles for Messages, Interest in your listings, New followers, Notes on your listings, Exchange updates, and New listings nearby are all on. A distance selector for nearby listings is set to 'Same as my feed (within ~5 km),' with options for ~1.2 km and ~5 km.

The neighborhood is starting to light up... slowly.
Screenshot of the gifthood.community web application in a desktop browser. The top navigation bar shows the gifthood.community logo and tabs for Nearby (selected), Activity, My posts, and Messages, plus a location selector reading 'Mississippi · Portland, OR', a 'Post' button, and a user avatar. The main content area, titled 'From neighbors you follow,' displays listing cards in a grid: an Offer of Pine Pellet Cat Litter, an Offer of a Manual Push Mower, an Offer of an IKEA Desk, and Requests for an Ethernet cable, Fruit Surplus, and an iPhone. Each card shows a photo or placeholder, an Offer/Request label, availability status, item title, neighborhood, distance, days posted, category tag, and the poster's name and avatar. Filter controls above include All/Offers/Requests toggles, a category filter, a ~5 km distance selector, and a 'Newest' sort. The right half of the screen shows an OpenStreetMap-based map of Portland, Oregon with colored pins marking the geographic locations of nearby listings.

Another milestone: The first neighbor-to-neighbor gifting transaction is complete. Less landfill; two more neighbors know each other, and a stack of note-taking pads found a new home.
A gifthood listing card titled "Assorted Notepads," tagged as an OFFER and marked "Gone." The photo shows a stack of lined white notepads of various sizes standing inside a filing box. Details read: Mississippi, Portland, OR · less than 1 km away · posted 7 days ago. Category: Hobbies & Crafts. Posted by Tim Trautmann.

It's working! The first exchange between neighbors is happening. 🥳
Screenshot of the gifthood.community app showing a neighbor request listing titled "Ethernet cable, 3-6 ft long," tagged "Electronics" and marked "Looking." Chris Hayashida-Knight (@chhknight.bsky.social) posted it 52 minutes ago with the note "Looking for a spare short Ethernet cable to connect a smart tv to a router." A map shows the approximate Alameda neighborhood area in Portland, OR, displayed as a roughly 1.2 km zone rather than an exact address. Below, a note reads "1 person has raised their hand," with @kraptv.gifthood.social replying 9 minutes ago: "I've got one! I'm nearby in Irvington. Do you want it tonight?!" A black "I can help" button sits at the bottom.

Don't leave these two on the curb. On Gifthood, the things you've outgrown find a neighbor who wants them — free, nearby, nothing bought or sold. Just given. Post yours in about two minutes → gifthood.community
An office chair and an armchair sit side by side on a wet Portland curb under a "Speed Limit 20" sign, with a handwritten cardboard "FREE" sign propped on them. Overlaid text reads "Don't leave these two on the curb" with the gifthood.community logo.

The genesis moment when I onboarded the first 30 folks to do some tire kicking on this little baby. With my buddy @kraptv.gifthood.social at Bar Bar in Portland, Oregon.

Gifthood is starting to light up! We are stoked about this genesis phase!
Screenshot of the gifthood.community web app showing a 'Nearby' listings feed. The top navigation bar has tabs for Nearby, Activity, My posts, and Messages, a location selector reading 'Mississippi · Portland, OR,' and a 'Post' button. The main panel shows item cards in two sections. 'From neighbors you follow' has one offer: 'Kids plush toys' (Baby & Kids, ~1.2 km, 3d). 'From everyone nearby' shows three cards: an offer for 'Correlated History of Earth' (Books & Media), a request for 'iPhone' marked 'Looking' (Electronics), and an offer for a 'Black & Decker Iron' (Tools & Hardware), all about 1.2 km away in Portland. Filter controls for category, distance (~5 km), and sort order (Newest) sit above the cards. The right half of the screen is an OpenStreetMap map of Portland, Oregon, centered on the Mississippi/Boise neighborhoods near the Willamette River, with two map markers indicating listing locations.

We are making flyers to give out at the neighborhood association garage sale.
Promotional flyer for "gifthood" (defined as a noun: a local network of neighbors who give away what they no longer need and ask for what they do — no money, no catch). Tagline reads "Not charity. Not a marketplace. Not another tab in Facebook. Just gifthood." Three features are listed: Give something you no longer need, Ask for something you do, and No feed, no ads — found by area, never your address. A QR code at the bottom links to gifthood.community to join the waitlist. Labeled "Free, always · Now in beta."

Happy Juneteenth, everyone! Adding some UX delight today. Now supporting @ mentions and smart linking right at the launch. 🤘🏻
Screenshot of a gifthood.community listing titled "Free guitar lessons for beginners," tagged OFFER and Help & Service, marked Available. Posted by @alice.test 25 minutes ago. The description reads "Played for fifteen years with @carol.test. Bring your own guitar; I'll bring the patience." — where @carol.test is rendered as a tappable mention link. Below is a map showing an approximate ~1.2 km area in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Portland, OR, with a note that it's shown as an area, never an address. A section reads "1 person has raised their hand," showing a comment that mentions @steward.test and links the domain bandcamp.com and the URL https://ghostly.com/ as smart links. Mentions and links are visually distinguished from plain text.

Our first listing in Portland's Mississippi Avenue neighborhood just went live. 🥳

A little behind-the-scenes show-and-tell. The waitlist is growing. Clusters haven't quite formed yet. But every shaded area on this map is where at least one person has signed up. Only one of these areas needs to get a deeper color, and it's a go.
Screenshot of the "Areas" page in the Operator Hub admin tool for gifthood.community. A left sidebar lists sections: Overview, Invites, Waitlist, Members, Areas (selected), Moderators, Audit log, and Funnel. The main panel shows a street map of the Portland, Oregon metro area, including Portland, Vancouver, Beaverton, Tigard, and Milwaukie, with the Columbia and Willamette Rivers running through it. A note at the top reads "No active regions — geo-bounding is dormant (posting is allowed anywhere)." A toolbar over the map offers Pan, Paint, and Erase tools and grid-resolution options (gh-6 · 1.2 km, gh-5 · 5 km, gh-4 · 40 km). A "Layers" panel shows "Waitlist — neighborhood" checked, "Waitlist — city-level" unchecked, and "Members" greyed out as coming soon. Scattered across the map are a handful of faint, semi-transparent shaded squares, each marking a grid cell where at least one person has signed up for the waitlist; they are spread out and sparse, with no dense cluster yet. A bar at the bottom reads "0 cells · covers 0 signups" next to a "New region name" field and a "Save region" button.
