the aurora was beautiful this week ❤️

It does seem like they have barred 2nd year graduate students from applying. This is devastating, I've been preparing my applications materials for MONTHS and now they all have to get binned...

This means individuals in the following statuses at the time of application are eligible:

Undergraduate in the final (senior) year of a bachelor’s degree program
Bachelor’s degree-holder with NO enrollment in a graduate degree program (non-degree graduate coursework allowed)
Individual enrolled in a joint bachelor’s-master’s degree program with at least three undergraduate years completed
First-year graduate student in their first graduate degree program with less than one academic year completed in the degree program (according to institution’s academic calendar)
Individuals enrolled in joint bachelor’s-master’s degree programs are considered graduate students. For GRFP, joint bachelor’s-master’s degrees are defined as degrees concurrently pursued and awarded.
Not be a current NSF employee.

one of my favorite plots ever is the 9/11 memorial bird density map (source: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... ; note that this is not even close to my field of study, i just find the plot very illustrative and interesting)

important work being done on the first day of the semester 👍

a wooden office door with 4 comic strips taped to it. the top one is from xqcd, and features two people sitting under a tree saying "of the four dimensions i could have spent my life being pushed inexorably through, i guess time isn't the worst. the middle left comic is from the farside, and features a group of scientists next to a telescope with the caption "all day long a tough group of astrophysicists would monopolize the telescope and intimidate other researchers". the middle right is a calvin and hobbes strip, featuring the two standing under the night sky. calvin says "if people sat outside and looked at the stars each night, i bet they'd live life a lot differently ". hobbes replies "how so?" and calvin says "well, when you look into infinity, you realize that there are more important things than what people do all day". the bottom comic is a man sitting an an empty room, reading a book titled "stars", with nothing else but several other books and a telescope.

i've been trying to find a copy of rybicki & lightman for years. i check every used book shop, garage sale, and flea market i go to for this specific book. lo and behold, the day before i start my graduate "rad. processes in astrophysics" class, i find it on the ground at my local used book shop.
