Environmental filtering and functional convergence were strongest in the Alps and on sun-exposed Mediterranean cliffs. Our results show that community assembly on cliffs is fundamentally context-dependent.

By comparing local communities with their regional species pools, we found that whether cliffs function as “extreme habitats” depends on climatic and topographic context.

Traditional wood-pastures remain among Europe’s most valuable cultural landscapes. The understanding of the processes that sustain their biodiversity and ecosystem functions is essential for their long-term conservation and restoration.

Our results highlight the importance of hierarchical environmental filtering: climate and land-use legacies strongly influence functional composition, soil carbon promotes species richness and functional diversity, and woody cover creates a trade-off between conservation and forage quality.

Using data from 30 wood-pasture sites, we investigated how climate, land-use history (land-cover transitions between 1964-2024 are shown in the image), woody vegetation structure, and soil properties interact across spatial scales to shape plant diversity, functional diversity, and forage quality.

Yesterday we shared the paper. Today I want to share the story behind it. We thought it was all about climate change. Then the models failed. That failure eventually led us to disturbances, and to a very different view of Europe’s flora. Read it @ communities.springernature.com/posts/europe...

Yet, both modern data and fossil records tell a different story: today’s distribution is far more restricted. This strong mismatch points to the long‑lasting impact of historical human pressures, highlighting that climate alone cannot explain the current patterns we see.
