Cat's Eye Nebula - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/7GLbNG
The Cat's Eye Nebula, one of the first planetary nebulae discovered, also has one of the most complex forms known to this kind of nebula. Eleven rings, or shells, of gas make up the Cat's Eye.

The full beauty of the Cat's Eye Nebula is revealed in this detailed view from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The image from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) shows a bull's eye pattern of eleven or even more concentric rings, or shells, around the Cat's Eye. Each 'ring' is actually the edge of a spherical bubble seen projected onto the sky -- that's why it appears bright along its outer edge.

Observations suggest the star ejected its mass in a series of pulses at 1,500-year intervals. These convulsions created dust shells, each of which contain as much mass as all of the planets in our solar system combined (still only one percent of the Sun's mass). These concentric shells make a layered, onion-skin structure around the dying star. The view from Hubble is like seeing an onion cut in half, where each skin layer is discernible.

The bull's-eye patterns seen around planetary nebulae come as a surprise to astronomers because they had no expectation that episodes of mass loss at the end of stellar lives would repeat every 1,500 years. Several explanations have been proposed, including cycles of magnetic activity somewhat similar to our own Sun's sunspot cycle, the action of companion stars orbiting around the dying star, and stellar pulsations. Another school of thought is t...

I’ve been working on the Jellyfish Nebula (IC 443) and surrounding region for a while. The jellyfish is a supernova remnant - shrapnel from a star that exploded ~30,000 years ago 9 hours, #Seestar S50 🔭 🧪 Multiple separate pointings Siril 1.3.6-dev, GraXpert, Starnet, GIMP
Two prominent yellow stars bookend the image. Close to the leftmost bright star is a large red nebula that looks like a jellyfish. Between the brights stars are other faint regions of glowing gas and dust. A small blue reflection nebula is centered at the top of the frame. The dark background behind the scene is dotted with numerous stars.

Egg Nebula by Hubble. Processed by @Tho_Carp www.flickr.com/photos/19746... 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image shows the Egg Nebula (also known as CRL 2688), a preplanetary nebula with a distinct, bipolar structure. The image is dominated by a bright central region, shaped like an elongated hourglass or butterfly, with luminous arcs and knots emanating outward. These structures are created by the high-speed stellar winds and jets ejected by the dying star at the nebula's center. The object glows with a cool orange and white hue, speckled with bright points of light that are likely background stars and dense knots within the nebula. Dark, dusty lanes are interspersed within the glowing regions, adding a stark contrast to the intricate and dynamic structure of the nebula. The entire scene is set against the black backdrop of space, emphasizing the isolation and brilliance of the nebula.

M78 nebula by Hubble. Processed by Dr. Mehmet Hakan Özsaraç. www.flickr.com/photos/mhozs... 🔭 🧪
This is a Hubble Space Telescope image of Messier 78 (M78), a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion. The image is dominated by a bright blueish glow in the center, where starlight reflects off dust and gas. Dark brown and gray tendrils of dust create a swirling, smoky effect against the blue, extending outwards from the central glow. Bright stars are scattered throughout the image, especially at the edges of the nebula. The overall effect is ethereal and dynamic.

Rings of Relativity. GAL-CLUS-022058s is the largest and one of the most complete Einstein rings ever discovered in our Universe. The light from the background galaxy has been distorted into the curve we see by the gravity of the galaxy cluster sitting in front of it. (Hubble) 🔭 🧪
This Hubble Space Telescope image shows GAL-CLUS-022058s, a galaxy cluster dominated by a bright elliptical galaxy at the center. A distinct, almost complete ring of light surrounds the central galaxy. This is an Einstein ring, formed by the gravitational lensing of light from a distant background galaxy as it passes through the massive cluster. The image also reveals numerous other galaxies of various shapes and colors scattered across the field.

Currently rereading the 8th book of the Expanse, Tiamat’s Wrath. It’s one of my favourite series and I’m currently a little sad about where I am in it. I’m nearing the end of this book and I’ll only have one more to read. I may just need to restart it once again.
