We can forgive a man for making a useful
thing as long as he does not admire it. The
only excuse for making a useless thing is that
one admires it intensely.

There's a mysterious Black woman in her mother's carriage who has no explanation:
In this paper, I’m examining the mysterious Black figure that is reportedly seen travelling with Carmilla’s mother: “a hideous black woman, with a sort of colored turban on her head, and who was gazing all the time from the carriage window, nodding and grinning derisively towards the ladies, with gleaming eyes and large white eyeballs, and her teeth set as if in fury” (Le Fanu). Through this examination, Carmilla’s Black Body can be understood as a manifestation of miscegenationist fears following from the publication of Charles Darwin’s The Descent of Man, the contemporarily published theory for the explanation of racial difference,

I'm writing a conference paper.
The vampire’s body is always a racialized body. Since its introduction into Anglo-Irish-American literature, the figure of the vampire has been constructed through and by the dominant theory of racial difference within the writer’s context. The vampire is also a body embedded within white supremacy and is always inflected with ideological fears surrounding “unnatural” mixing of races that threaten the racial power structure. This is clear from John Polidori’s Orientalist satire of Lord Byron that appears as in “The Vampyre,” which was in turn burlesqued by the pseudonymous Uriah D’Arcy as “The Black Vampyre”. It likewise appears in the central text Dracula, as the Count is both a proud European whose prowess in bloody battle defeats the Ottoman Empire but whose racial otherness threatens the male Anglo-Saxon heroes with threats to seduce and breed with/through their women. Even the deadly white pallor of the vampire’s body demonstrates “the importance of the vampire’s skin as a denominator of otherness” (Franck); that is, the too-white body is a racialized body too. Situated between these texts written at opposite ends of the nineteenth century is Carmilla, the novella/novel whose racial politics remain less examined than her vampiric colleaguesThe vampire’s body is always a racialized body. “Be calm! I entreat you to hear me before you give vent to your hatred on my devoted head. Have I not suffered enough, that you seek to increase my misery? Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it. Remember, thou hast made me more powerful than thyself; my height is superior to thine, my joints more supple. But I will not be tempted to set myself in opposition to thee. I am thy creature, and I will be even mild and docile to my natural lord and king if thou wilt also perform thy part, the which thou owest me. Oh, Frankenstein, be not equitable to every other and trample upon me alone, to whom thy justice, and even thy clemency and affection, is most due. Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed. Everywhere I see bliss, from which I alone am irrevocably excluded. I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.”

The Pedagogy is working.
The story shows why it can be a bad idea to get involved in something when you
honestly just don't really know what is happening. Like Dr. Kasper said, “Fuck around and Find
out.” The lesson is basically that sometimes it’s better to mind your own business instead of
getting involved or interfering in someone else's situation. (Panchatantra. Page 26.)

Sonnet 138: When my love swears that she is made of truth

Play Audio
By William Shakespeare
When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutored youth,
Unlearnèd in the world’s false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed.
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
Oh, love’s best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not to have years told.
Therefore I lie with her and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flattered be.

“The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing”.

In my ideal world it's still an analytical poem with a thesis statement and you can use it to do a rhetorical analysis, but you open the unit up with "How To Make A Dadaist Poem"
How to Make a Dadaist Poem
(method of Tristan Tzara)
To make a Dadaist poem:

Take a newspaper.
Take a pair of scissors.
Choose an article as long as you are planning to make your poem.
Cut out the article.
Then cut out each of the words that make up this article and put them in a bag.
Shake it gently.
Then take out the scraps one after the other in the order in which they left the bag.
Copy conscientiously.
The poem will be like you.
And here are you a writer, infinitely original and endowed with a sensibility that is charming though beyond the understanding of the vulgar.
--Tristan Tzara
