It's a good day when your planning pays off and you get a twofer! First a Green Flash at Pigeon Point Lighthouse (and if you zoom in a flight of pelicans), and then a tiny 4% sliver of the waxing Crescent Moon right after sunset. 9/12/2026

A look at the past 6 Euro Multi-Model Mean Ensemble Niño 3.4 forecasts relative to the observed. The observed is running below the three latest (Jul, Aug, Sep) runs. [Note: the observed and forecasts are for the ONI 3,4 and not the RONI 3.4, which runs about 0.8 to 1.0°C cooler.]

For the 5th consecutive week, the Relative Niño 3.4 region has been struck at +1.8, This puts it slightly lower than 1997, but note that 1997 took a slight dip in mid-Sept. Overall, the distribution of SSTA across the tropical Pacific remains most similar between 2026 and 1997.

Normally a bright moon and the Milky Way are mutually exclusive. But my plan to get to Pigeon Point right after full darkness and just when the moon was rising in the east, came together. The moon did wash out the Milky Way a bit, but it nicely sidelit the lighthouse and adjacent trees. 8/29/2026

The May CPC ENSO Outlook has just been posted, with signs continuing to point toward at least a strong El Niño next fall and winter. Note that the term "Super" is nowhere to be seen, but rather "Very Strong" for a RONI of > 2.0°C.

Some context to consider about the latest ECMWF Niño3.4 forecast. Looking at the past 9-years of May forecasts, there appears to be a strong warm bias. They are also based old 981-2010 climatology and the old ONI and not the newer RONI. Caveat emptor.
