Afraid you'll miss your chance to see this work in person? Fear not! You have nearly two weeks left before it descends back into the underworld (a.k.a. Getty drawings storage). 💀 See Odilon Redon: Otherworldly Visions at the Getty Center until October 18, 2026. gty.art/Redon26

Odilon Redon: Otherworldly Visions | Getty Exhibitions
Explore the strange and fantastical world of French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon.

But Redon still leaves the work's meaning to interpretation. By placing the skeletons in a dark void, he separated the animated figures from the context of the poem. Are the skeletons friends or foes? How did they end up in this chaotic situation? Are they, perhaps, at play?
Detail of the bones, composed strikingly from the blank reserve of the paper rather than the addition of white media.

Odilon Redon often responded to the novels and poetry he read by making art. For this macabre but playful drawing, he took his inspiration from The Battle of the Bones—a poem written by his friend, Maurice Bouchor. 🖼️ French poet and playwright Maurice Bouchor (1855-1929), nd, unknown, CC0
Portrait drawing of Bouchor, who wears a suit and sports a really excellent beard.

This drawing was inspired by a poem.
Detail from a drawing that captures the aftermath of a fantastical duel between two skeletons, with broken bones scattered across the scene. The skeleton on the right of the composition has lost its head and lower left leg but sits erect and poised to continue the fight.

Moonlight on Lake George (detail), about 1875, S. R. Stoddard. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
A lake barely lit by cloud-obscured moonlight. A large tree casts shadow over the silhouette of a person sitting at the edge of the restless water, fist to their chin as if in thought.

Landscape with Lake, late 19th century, artist unknown. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
A landscape with trees, a lake, and a stark white sky rendered in rusty red pigment. The location and artist are both a mystery. The foliage is blurry, and a small building is barely perceptible behind trees.

Lake, 1907-1943, Louis Fleckenstein. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
It's as if this lake is disappearing. A white blur, totally opaque on the left side of the image, reveals more and more as the eye moves right. Dark trees and imposing mountains emerge, looming behind black waters.

Meadow Lake, Summit City (detail); about 1872, Thomas Houseworth & Company. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
At Meadow Lake, dozens of bare or sparsely needled trees emerge from the water like skeletal fingers casting ghostly reflections that melt into a dark foreground.

Bear Lake, 1907–1943, Louis Fleckenstein. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
A misty view of Bear Lake. There is a full-sized evergreen tree just growing out of the middle of the water. Another cluster of small plants appears to float in from the right, like a ghostly ship.

Lake Angela and Summit, near Donner Peak. Nevada County. (detail), 1866, Lawrence & Houseworth. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
A rocky lakeshore at Donner Peak (Yes, as in the Donner Party.) is mirrored in dark water, where ghostly, blurred reflections seem almost alive. In the foreground, a rock resembles a human head staring intensely back at the viewer.

Upper Saranac Lake - Bartlett's Landing Moonlight (detail), about 1870, G. W. Baldwin. Getty Museum www.getty.edu/art/collecti...
This composition feels visually uneven, with the bright moon and churning clouds pulling attention to the left. An eerie orb on the lake and scattered rocks reinforce a mood of chaos and unease.

Lola Álvarez Bravo maintained friendships with a community of artists, including Frida Kahlo. 🎨 Kahlo and Álvarez Bravo shared a particularly close relationship, perhaps because of their turbulent marriages and limited female role models in their respective fields.
