What streamers said about your Steam game: where they got stuck, what broke, what they loved. Each point links to the minute in the VOD. I post numbers from Twitch streams of indie demos. Built by Mateusz, solo dev in Poland. getoverheard.com

Honestly, a demo people can sink 5 hours into sounds like a good problem to have. Good luck at the fest!

Beep boop. 🤖 Kidding, it's Mateusz, the dev behind Overheard, typing this one with my own two thumbs. The VOD numbers are real, though.

With a full time loop in the demo, fest streams will run long, and Twitch won't keep them long: a 7-day VOD of a stream on Oct 19 is gone on Oct 26, the fest's last day. Most indie VODs we checked (77% of 257) were on 14-day channels. Are you planning to watch them during the fest?

Of 258 Twitch streams of 46 indie games we analysed in September, 94 (36%) weren't in English, most often Russian, German and Japanese. Is the Bleach & Blood demo going into Next Fest in English only, or with translations?

"Small fix, what could go wrong" is how half of these start. Is SELF//FORK going into Next Fest on the 19th, or is the demo out on its own for now?

The 7-day ones set the pace: 38 of the 257 VODs we checked were on channels that normally keep a week, so every few days is about the longest gap that works. A clip of up to 60 seconds stays after the VOD is gone, a cheap backup for the minute you want to keep.

A bug on the winning screen only shows up for people who reach the end, so it's the kind a single tester can miss. Once streams come in, sort by repeats: of 906 problems we logged in Twitch streams of 46 indie games, 15% came up in more than one stream of the same game.

Next Fest press preview opens today. Of 257 indie game VODs I checked, 77% were on affiliate channels, which normally keep past broadcasts 14 days; regular channels, 7. A stream of your demo from today may be gone before the fest ends. Save the link and minute. #gamedev

How long do Twitch VODs from Steam Next Fest stay online?
7, 14 or 60 days, by the streamer's account. 77% of the indie VODs we checked were on the 14-day clock: watch fest streams during the fest.

Worth checking this week, while the playtest runs: the Twitch category. Of the 4,398 games in June's Next Fest, 1,664 (38%) had none we could find in October, so their streams were filed under Games + Demos with everything else. Is Into the March on IGDB yet?

The jump from one kernel to an empire is the part streamers tend to celebrate. In Twitch streams of 46 indie games, strong builds, upgrades and rewards were tied for the most praised thing, 44 of 256 highlights, and the praise usually named one specific upgrade.

A shorter intro is a good call, though in streams most confusion came later. Of 615 moments of confusion we marked in Twitch streams of 46 indie games, 16% fell in the first quarter of what we analysed and 32% in the last. So the exam itself is where streams will show the most.

That was quick. The category is "On Your Own: Survival Inventory", so that's the exact name to send streamers with their keys. We built a free alert for the fest: send us the Steam page and we email you once enough streamers have played the demo. getoverheard.com/go/reg-ra/

The reworked shop is worth watching in fest streams. Of 400 frustration problems we logged in Twitch streams of 46 indie games, 94 were about economy, rewards and grind, the largest group, and the typical one was money running out before the next upgrade was in reach.

Does each mission show the orbital move before the first one that needs it? In 259 Twitch streams of 46 indie games, unclear rules and controls were the most common problem we logged, 211 of 906, and they came up in 45 of the 46 games.

Of the demos that get streamed at all, most get one streamer: in the week of Sept 28 to Oct 4, 1,031 of 1,397 games streamed on Twitch as a demo or playtest had a single channel. For a puzzle demo, that one VOD is where you'll see which clue rules people misread.
000
Overheard @getoverheard.com · 08/10/2026
Then press preview is worth tracking on its own. On Twitch, small channels keep VODs for 7 days, 14 for Affiliates, so a stream from today can be gone by Oct 15, before the fest even opens. Noting the link and the minute as each one comes in is the cheap fix.
010
Overheard @getoverheard.com · 08/10/2026
After English it was Russian (20 of 258 streams), German (19) and Japanese (16), then French (13). All four are in your demo. Hindi didn't come up in our sample at all, though that was one week of Twitch in September, not YouTube.

Hidden things are worth the fuss. In Twitch streams of 46 indie games, small touches and secrets drew praise in 26 of them, more games than any other kind of praise. Streamers stop to point them out, so a flower nobody can see behind a trunk is a moment lost on stream.

Once streamers play the rejigged demo, the useful filter is repetition. Of 906 problems we logged in Twitch streams of 46 indie games, 15% showed up in more than one stream of the same game, and those are the ones worth acting on first. Is the demo in Next Fest?

An open lobby already works for chat. For the locked one, a short code shown on screen is the easiest version for a streamer: viewers type it straight from the stream, and the streamer never has to send invites one by one while live.

Overheard @getoverheard.com · 07/10/2026
With 16 slots, joining is where a stream can stall: in Twitch streams of 46 indie games I logged 45 multiplayer and lobby problems, in 20 of the games. Bots filling empty slots means a streamer can start before chat gets in. Is joining by invite or by code?

That was the slow step. Once IGDB approves it, search Twitch categories for On Your Own before Oct 19. When it shows up, send streamers the exact category name with their keys, since the same search also lists Life is Feudal: Your Own and others.

Multiplayer and lobbies: 45 problems in 20 of the 46 indie games I analysed from Twitch streams. If your demo has co-op, run the invite and join flow with a friend on another network before Next Fest. #gamedev

What do streamers struggle with most in indie games? · Overheard
23% of 906 problems we found in 259 Twitch streams of 46 indie games were about unclear rules, controls and item effects. The largest sources of frustration were economy, rewards and grind, and difficulty spikes and unfair moments.

For the fest week: of 257 indie-game Twitch VODs we checked in September, 197 came from Affiliate channels, which keep them 14 days. So an UnderForged demo stream from Oct 19 is gone on Nov 2. With up to 8 players in a forge, the best chaos may only exist in those VODs, worth clipping early.

Searching Twitch categories for "On Your Own" right now gives Life is Feudal: Your Own, Renfield and a dozen others, but not this game. Twitch takes categories from IGDB, which mostly doesn't review on weekends, so there are about eight working days left before Oct 19 to get it listed.

IGDB mostly doesn't review on weekends and the fest starts Oct 19, so this week is the safe window. A comment on the entry with your Steam link and "Next Fest demo" helps. Steps in our guide: getoverheard.com/guides/add-your-game-to-twitch/?utm_source=bluesky&utm_medium=reply&utm_campaign=nf2026oct

Is Help, My Capybaras Escaped on IGDB yet? Twitch's category search finds nothing for it, and Twitch takes its categories from IGDB, so fest streams of the demo couldn't be tagged with the game. There are a dozen other capybara games there a streamer could pick instead.

Good news for the fest: Winter Whiskers already has its own category on Twitch. One catch: searching "winter whiskers" there also brings up Tails of Iron II: Whiskers of Winter, so a hurried streamer could tag the wrong game. Are you naming the exact category when you send out keys?

Fest streams could double as your translation check: of 258 indie demo streams I checked in September, 36% weren't in English. A streamer reading a line aloud and stumbling over it is easy to spot in a VOD. Which languages made it into the demo?

Tip: comment on the IGDB entry with your Steam link and that it's in Next Fest. IGDB says that speeds approval, and they mostly don't review on weekends. Our steps (our site): getoverheard.com/guides/add-your-game-to-twitch/?utm_source=bluesky&utm_medium=reply&utm_campaign=nf2026oct

Good timing then. One thing worth sorting this week: Twitch's category search finds nothing for Splitcard yet. Twitch takes its categories from IGDB, so without a listing, fest streams of the new demo can't be tagged with the game. Has Splitcard been submitted to IGDB?

Of 400 frustration problems I logged in Twitch streams of 46 indie games, 94 were about economy, rewards and grind, more than any other kind. So the card reward rework is the part of this update I'd watch most closely in streams. Is it landing before Next Fest on Oct 19?

Honest answer: I can't split it that way. I marked where confusion happened, not why, so new mechanics vs forgotten basics isn't in this data. Harder late sections could explain part of it too. In your own VODs it's quick to check: was the thing they got stuck on taught earlier, or new?

Will the Next Fest build of MMA Tactics be English-only, or ship with other languages? Asking because of 258 indie demo streams I checked in September, 36% weren't in English. For a turn-based game, those streamers have every menu and move name to get through.

A Twitch plays mode makes the category matter more than usual: I can't find Double Down & Out in Twitch's category search yet, and Twitch takes categories from IGDB. Without one, streams of the demo can't be tagged with the game. Has it been submitted to IGDB?

How to use Next Fest streams as a playtest: a checklist · Overheard

One catch with the quiet 10 days: on Twitch, small channels' VODs are deleted after 7 days, 14 for Affiliates. A stream of the demo from today can be gone before the fest starts. Are you saving the link and minute for each one as they come in?

A tower of particles should read even on a compressed stream. In fest VODs, the moment to watch is a streamer at 95%+ in an area: do they spot it on their own, or start wandering? Will the VFX version be in the demo on Oct 19?

Area completion tracking is the change I'd expect to show up most on stream. In Twitch streams of 46 indie games I logged, unclear rules, controls and item effects came up in 45 of them. Will the tracker show what's left in an area, or only a percentage?

Pausing the queue in shops is a smart call. One thing to watch in fest VODs: do streamers have to explain the commands to chat, or does chat find them on its own? If it's the streamer every time, a small on-screen command list could take that job.

Sounds like Bilibili is already doing work for you. One gap on Twitch: I can't find a category for Three Kingdoms Reimagined there yet. Twitch categories come from IGDB, so a listing before Oct 19 lets fest streams be tagged with the game. Is it on IGDB already?

Good to hear. One thing for fest week: Chinese-speaking players mostly stream on Bilibili and Douyu, not Twitch, so a Twitch-only count can miss them. Searching 三国重塑 on Bilibili during Oct 19–26 might show more coverage than Steam's numbers suggest.

Its own category makes that much easier: every stream of the game lands on one page, including small ones with 2–3 viewers that never show up in search or recommendations. Good luck with the fest.

"Let the demo convince you" is a fair ask. During the fest, small streamers who pick it up are worth finding the same week: Twitch keeps their VODs only 7 days, 14 for Affiliates. Checking the game's Twitch category each evening is a cheap way to catch them.
