I think my child has seen it three years running as part of PSHE. In fact in Year 11 last week the teacher said "we are going to talk about consent, but we're not watching the tea video again". (It's very clear though which is what makes it so good.)

Fourth Wing is maximum spicy. I was listening to it on Audiobook to see what the fuss was about and at least they're keen on enthusiastic consent even if the characters make terrible choices otherwise.

O_O My 11 year old niece was complaining that her mum wouldn't let her get a copy of Fourth Wing, and B was like "my mum says I can't read it either*!" *This was at least a year ago. At almost 16 now I'd kinda shrug and look the other way but she's very aroace and wouldn't read it anyhow.

I used to say "Yes, I have a degree in art, but I failed the glue module" because, yeah.

Another day, another cat drawing. This time it's a more difficultly coloured cat on a more difficult background. 😬
A drawing of a Cabby cat, partially rendered, against a backdrop of a black and white botanical duvet cover. The drawing sits atop the same duvet cover, illustrating the massive job I've given myself.

How about: stock up on things you'll eat. You should rotate your stock anyways and that way everything gets used. :)

This article is fine, but FGS are we not allowed anything "nice" in case of emergency? (Tinned meats and instant noodles are too high in salt! Avoid fruit tinned in syrup! Sugar salt fat baaaad when world falling apart.) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

What food items should you stock up on in case of an emergency?
Extreme weather may be changing the way we need to shop, with the UK government urging people to stock up on canned goods.

Not on my bingo card for today: learning to patch whatever happens when a 17+ year old set of hooks pulls out of the wall. Apparently Rawl plugs were for numpties.when the last owner installed it.
A wall with two rather gaping holes in it.

Boba the derpcat in the sun.

Oh yeah, went to Ireland/NI in August. Pretty. Wayy to much driving but I needed to get B away from home for a bit and she wanted to see the last bit of the UK she hadn't.

Having a bit of a meh day so cheered myself up by finally covering the cover of my sketchbook with a garden posca portrait.
A black sketchbook cover with a lot of scribbles on it including some things that look like leaves and others that look like sunflowers at the very bottom there is a tiny bit written that says "how does your garden grow?"

I should say that 99% of the student timetables are straightforward, and are based on a combo of The Timetable I produced in July and on teacher's assignments of students to classes. The 1% are students who missed being assigned or need changes, or where I made random mistakes.

Ellen @gershamabob.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Rejoice! For I have made it through the first week of school and produced timetables for 1700 students. *exits persued by a bear"

I assume it includes people who don't cycle at all, rather than average of all those who cycle. (Like my friend who commutes by walking and train.)

I don't actually believe that all things people like to attribute to neurodiversity are actually "things". And that's partially because I have read a lot of takes like "all people with ADHD are like this" and I don't and was diagnosed as a kid. :P

See, the problem is that I like cheddar a lot. I don't like stomach pain. Also my child is really sensitive to lactose.

Ellen @gershamabob.bsky.social · 13/08/2026
That's irritating. They make the only *nice* lactose free cheddar.

B is highly miffed that they're not studying Jekyll and Hyde and is therefore salty about having to read Frankenstein.

Ellen @gershamabob.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I have promised to read Frankenstein alongside B as it might be the way to get her to do it in a timely fashion instead of on 6th September.

Last night's dream had almost fever dream intensity and persistence and I don't want tonight to be also pestered by the compulsion that I must meet a man in a graveyard in Ireland on Thursday to exchange a mysterious parcel. (Why brain, why?)

B has already read it and really liked it - I can lend it to you (and Elder if interested) after I'm done. :)

Current mood: I have eclipse glasses floating around somewhere after last year's flop attempt to see the solar eclipse over my parents' house. (Total cloud-out.) I can't be arsed to find them. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm reading "The Book of Bill" (Gravity Falls, at B's insistance) and the audiobook of "Hemlock & Silver" (T. Kingfisher) and I've got "I Was a Teenage Death God" by my friend @mjbeasi.com queued up for my holiday

Not off the top of my head, but I have definitely used them in the John Henry Brookes building when I was caught short, and they were open to public and the all-in-one sort with its own sink.

May I submit Oxford Brookes? There are unisex loos on the ground floor of the main building. Presumably there are more loos by the library too and possibly near the various cafes.

Dunno, I certainly remember a lot of book-swapping in my youthful friend group. I'd never have met Archie if we didn't swap books... (my personal tiny domino to giant domino).

Ellen @gershamabob.bsky.social · 27/07/2026
My teen's friend group DOES have reading as a shared interest, and they pass around books and book recs, so it does still exist. Also B sometimes will pick up book recs from her dad and I, reads at home if the current book is engaging enough, and listens to a lot of audiobooks.

I have finally gotten B to read one of my favourite series (the Scholomance by Naomi Novik) and our discussions about what's going on halfway through the first book have made me remember what a finely crafted trilogy it is. 📚 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Deadl...
