Is that right? There is, for example, no constituency in the UK for pro-Israel politics outside of Jews, fascists, and MPs. And yet on no issue is the media line whipped so grimly, to the visible terror of journalists, from the Telegraph to the Guardian.

Mamdani took *the exact same stance* the Greens just did, responding to 'does Israel have the right to exist' with 'as a non-ethnostate'. But you had bald cunts like Lynsky pretending they wouldn't murderise him if he was British. Anti-zionism is now *more accepted* in the US than here. Insane.

I'm still confused about when wanting an ethnostate is racist and when it isn't.

Every single journalist for a mainstream publication, almost literally apart from Owen Jones, was intimidated into silence about Britain being an accomplice to genocide. Now they're doing a five minute hate against Polanski to soothe their rotten consciences. Of course it can fucking happen here.

Exactly. The benefit of 'all sides are bad' to the rank-and-file liberal is they don't have to do anything. The benefit to the top brass is they can do anything.

I just think this analysis is wrong, and Israel is a liability to the empire not an asset. The simpler but taboo explanation is that America supports Israel against self-interest because a large proportion of US oligarchs are racist Jews, and the rest of the oligarchy doesn't care enough to stop it.

The thing is, your racism is evident even in the language of this tweet.

No they're not. No-one knew South Africa wouldn't turn out like Algeria, but that didn't make it unreasonable to support one SA state. It's likewise defensible in this case to heavily discount the interests of Israeli Jews, who are, overwhelmingly, participants and beneficiaries of grave crimes.

The page on Algeria you posted isn't the most balanced account of why the pieds-noirs left, but you'd have to be very right wing to think their fate means it would have been better if colonial rule over the Algerians had remained. Two-state>one-state with expulsions>status quo.

I don't think this stuff will have much impact electorally. To the extent the A-S stuff hurt Corbyn, it was with either send-them-home types by implying he was a Muslim-lover, or conformist liberals who take the media seriously. I doubt either description applies to many potential Green voters.

If only they'd stayed on bluesky! Then they'd never have seen the atrocity videos, or indeed heard anything about the genocide, until it came time to condemn people who are angry about it in an insufficiently genteel way.

Yes; and they put a glass roof over the courtyard 25 years ago without AC or even proper ventilation, which means it looks like an airport and is smelly and dangerously hot in conditions over about 23C. Thanks Lord Foster!

What they should accept is irrelevant to what the state should do, which is not imprison them* and close down Elbit factories itself. * for vandalism at any rate. The injury to the cop was accepted by the prosecution as unintentional.

You surely recognise that breaking the law is morally justified in some cases - you just don't think that British complicity in genocide is sufficiently serious to be one of those cases.

Why do we have to pretend it's not true that the majority of British Jews are Israel supporters? There is a serious radicalisation problem among British Jews, whether we're allowed to mention it or not.

gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
If British Muslims supported Isis at the rate British Jews support its moral equivalent then I think everyone would agree we had a problem.

Clear-throatedly condemning Israel's genocide and wars of expansion, and the support of the same by British Jewish institutions, would do a lot more to combat antisemitism than complaining about other people's speculations about a currently unsolved case of arson.

Was this post just a joke too subtle for me?
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
The trouble is that most liberals would characterise what you just said as anti-semitic. I mean, it *is* anti-semitic in the sense that it reflects very badly on Jews as a group. It just happens to be true.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
So why are you taking that up with the anti-zionist (Hassan) who tweeted about him, but not with the zionist (economist editor) who gave him a prominent interview and made him look good by being a moral and intellectual shambles?
020
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 22/03/2026
Well, why *aren't* prominent non-Nazis - you, for instance - making the good points that Carlson does? btw thanks for the good-faith advice on how best to stop anti-zionism being smeared as anti-semitism!

000

Careful, it's taboo to say that among British liberals. (Their American counterparts, by contrast, are making great strides in believing their lying eyes).

The only people who wanted us to be involved are fascists or the, uh, 'sectarian' portion of the commentariat. The people who don't want us to be involved are literally everyone else (including anyone who would ever consider voting Labour).

But why should a single unlucky cohort of students eat the entire cost of the impact of COVID on HE (by receiving an inferior product at full price) rather than amortising the cost over multiple cohorts (or indeed over the rest of society)?
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 21/02/2026
I'm struck by how many academics seem to think 'we couldn't provide it' is a slam-dunk defense for not providing a service that was paid for; also by the implicit view that, effectively, the whole cost of the impact of COVID on HE should be borne by one cohort of students.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 18/12/2025
Right, but I'd quibble about 'equality'. In my (not very important) discipline, the current generation of assistant professors is worse than it would be if there were more white men in it; and everyone knows it. But the average quality of professors would improve if more white men retired.

There's an interesting subset of Sensibles who are aghast at Labour's immigration politics but maintain a Trappist silence over the genocide-complicity and the concomitant inflammatory lies about Muslims. What could explain this?
020
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 21/10/2025
I think we should acknowledge that it's difficult and perhaps unreasonable to ask British Muslims not to be 'suspicious' of British Jews when the majority of the latter are supporters of the country that is genociding a Muslim population.
010
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
You might acknowledge the context that, while other firms may sing about murdering their racial enemies (not sure this is actually true), plenty of Maccabi fans *actually have murdered their racial enemies*. Demanding that the people of Birmingham tolerate them gloating about this is jaw-dropping.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 20/10/2025
Yeah, nights are still cool enough that AC wouldn't be necessary *if* we lived in much better-designed buildings than many of us actually do. But a lot of London flats are straightforwardly uninhabitable in summer - legit hazardous to health.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 19/10/2025
Do you think it might also be tinged by knowing that some of the Israeli fans on the streets of Birmingham will have recently been murdering children? And the rest of them loudly approve of murdering children?
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 18/10/2025
There's a big spectrum between stabbing people and making them feel unwelcome. I don't think people in the 80s had any obligation to smile at white South African tourists either.
110
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 18/10/2025
It's not regrettable if people are hostile to Israelis! This is such a bubble view. Of course civil disorder is bad for entirely general reasons, but normal people aren't disposed to welcome citizens of a country committing genocide with overwhelming public support.
010
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 18/10/2025
No mainstream group believes that. Fascists, hasbara accounts, and journalists (but I'm repeating myself) believe that. There is not some (reachable) bloc of the public anxious to defend the honour of Israelis, let alone Israeli hooligans just back from shooting Arab children.
010
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 18/10/2025
I think that while some, like Starmer, are ideological zionists, others like Ed Davey have simply microwaved their brains on hasbara-saturated social media to the point they think the non-fash British public has warm feelings toward Israel, in the teeth of all polling evidence.
020
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 17/10/2025
It's prima facie absurd to say this has nothing to do with the Maccabi fans' well-documented behaviour, when comparable behaviour often results in bans for other teams. Do you genuinely believe that, or are you just dog-whistling about 'sectarianism' (Muslim Britons playing any role in politics)?
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 17/10/2025
At the same time, taking shelter in 'it's complicated' is often a sign of intellectual laziness, ignorance or moral cowardice (while flattering oneself as a nuanced sophisticate). Many questions do in fact have answers!
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 05/10/2025
Disagree. There's no reason for the anti-genocide movement to ever draw attention to the pretext for the genocide, especially on a day which will otherwise be all-channels weaponising of that pretext by the genocidaires.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 05/10/2025
In this case it's simpler than that: he's a bigoted Jewish supremacist, as evidenced by many of his posts since the genocide began.
000
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 04/10/2025
There is simply no use for a special word for racism against Jews. All it does is is sacralise, essentialise, and create a hierarchy of racism, as if racism against Jews were a mystical, fundamental force in history, and Jews were uniquely important victims of racism.

I love the idea that you're devastated that pro-Palestine activism hasn't been more effective. Thanks for the good faith advice!

gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 03/10/2025
It gets complicated though: if the killer just wanted to kill supporters of the genocide, then killing members of an explicitly Zionist synagogue was a pretty good means to that end.
100
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 02/09/2025
Do you mind if I describe your politics as jew-centrism? You certainly haven't had much to say about the genocide our country is facilitating, which is quite strange for a professional political commentator.
020

I agree, it's just not serious to argue that international law should be applied to western leaders.

I guess students take international law and the Genocide Convention seriously, before they grow up into evil cunts like you.
100
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
The classic balancing act between genocide and not-genocide. The Sensible Moderate option is arming and providing logistical support for a genocide, and Starmer has threaded that needle with aplomb.
010
gernt.bsky.social @gernt.bsky.social · 25/08/2025
It's not inactivity, Starmer is knowingly supplying arms being used in a genocide and the British military are providing logistical and intelligence support. I know the media aren't making this clear to you but that's because they're evil too.
