Google “what is the evidence for Russia intending to attack the UK?” and you won’t get a single independent (ie non govt./corporate sponsored or supporting) result that provides a genuinely trustworthy, and sufficiently comprehensive, answer.

So, BBC Radio 3 has three dedicated jazz programmes (which it doesn’t really highlight), and between the three, two played one Sonny Rollins track - the same one, his most famous, St Thomas. Rollins was a giant in jazz. Pathetic.

It appears to me (albeit with limited research into this) that the campaigns for, and organisations involved in, open access to academic journals are restricted to scientific fields. What is happening with open access to journals in the arts, humanities and social sciences?

These realities will never change so long as they are not clearly, unambiguously, named. So much criticism - in every form of media - is like timid pleas, scared to offend, scared of real confrontation with the powers that be. We need to call a spade a spade.

On critics: That mainstream political discourse is highly circumscribed is well recognised. But just as invidious is the way that much criticism of the effects of capitalism and imperialism is also cirmumscribed, so that their deeper realities are left unstated. 1/2

(each reinforcing the other); “the right”, a disregard and resistance to either of these dispositions and practices. All else - private property v the commons, profit v social need, fake v genuine democracy etc. etc. - flow from this. 2/2

If the political categories of “left” and “right” are to have any useful value, then they are best viewed as, fundamentally, representing, respectively: “the left”, a disposition for, and consistent practice of, caring for others, and understanding all that this entails 🧵 1/2

The principle problem for the Greens isn’t about making their programme and message more like Corbyn’s in 2017, it’s how not to be a left social democrat party mk2. One that faces up to, not gives in to, capitalist realities.

In a global capitalist economy there is never any real control, except at the margins. It’s an irrational system, wars or no wars.

I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds. I support neither imperialism or dictatorship. Sahar Delijani said it best:
I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves.
Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone.
That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins.
If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after.

It’s odd that Francis doesn’t mention bluesky, which was meant to be an alternative less toxic site. This has only marginally proved to the case. It needs better resources/promotion Given the toxicity of social media, a moral question now faces all of us: is it still ethical to use it? Frances Ryan

A great article by @jasonhickel.bsky.social and @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social. But I do wish we could all stop using the wolf as a metaphor for the worst kinds of human behaviour. Wolves are wonderful creatures, endlessly maligned - and also victims of capitalism. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We can move beyond the capitalist model and save the climate – here are the first three steps | Jason Hickel and Yanis Varoufakis
Capitalism cares about our species’ prospects as much as a wolf cares about a lamb’s. But democratise our economy and a better world is within our grasp, say Jason Hickel and Yanis Varoufakis

Yes, there is a whole host of reasons (I recently listed some on X). But, I suggest, they are all linked to the logic of ever increasing commercialisation, commodification and capital accumulation.

That I agree with. Due, in large part, I suggest, to the growth and increasing sophistication of the far right, which has pulled the centre towards it.

I do think that there are some signs of Polanski falling for the same kind of degenerate social media profile typical of the other parties. Times have moved on, but I believe that - allowing for different personalities - ZP would be wise to incorporate the example of Tony Benn into his presentation.

I’m at a loss to figure how the LP pre-Blair was somehow more principled or radical than the present lot. Some, Foot, Benn, Smith obviously, but Callaghan/Healy/kinnock et al, only marginally so.

Let me add: adherence to principles requires thinking through what they entail for their practical realisation, based on reason and evidence. So, someone who publicly opposes the science of climate change, for example, would fail the test.

There are clear links between nativism, a fetishisation of nature and a reactionary Christianity, that all converge in a basically conservative cast of mind. It is clearly taking hold across the world. I feel that if we don’t begin to understand its deep psychological roots, it might defeat us.
