I found the original image, still out there ...
Old image from BBC Bitesize, wrongly identifying the rock that underlies Edinburgh's Royal Mile as limestone. It is in fact sandstone and mudstone.

May I rant? I complained years ago about incorrect information on BBC Bitesize (a learning resource). They said the info was archived and couldn't be updated when things changed (it was wrong to start with). Now they've redrawn the diagram with same error ... www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/gui...
Extract from BBC Bitesize website showing the development of a crag and tail, using Edinburgh Castle as an example. The image suggests there is limestone in the tail, which is wrong.

Are you starting to plan for the autumn? Great news, the Centre for Open Learning at Edinburgh University have restarted our introductory, in-person geology courses this term, taught by me and Fiona McGibbon. col.ed.ac.uk/lifelong-lea...

A magical day in the company of Joanna Kessel & Helen Bodycomb, on final day of their deep time mosaics workshop in Edinburgh. The participants made a stunning range of beautiful and thought-provoking mosaics in stone and other materials, in celebration of the Tercentenary of James Hutton's birth.

The hill(s) I will die on. Arthur's Seat & Salisbury Crags are separate hills. Separate geologically, topographically and on Ordnance Survey maps. Yesterday's fire was on the slopes of Salisbury Crags. Many news sources, the fire service & even Historic Environment Scotland have got this wrong!

Happy (other) birthday to James Hutton, born on this day, 14th June 1726, in the calendar used in most of Europe at the time. During Hutton's life, Britain caught up by missing 11 days of 1752. Nice to be following in his footsteps today, exploring the granite boundary in northern hills of Arran.

Nice to get Siccar Point to myself for a change, where are you all? Happy birthday Dr Hutton, 300 years old today. #HuttonTercentenary

A beautiful day! My life has been dominated for the last year by building the Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point to celebrate James Hutton's 300th birthday. Formal launch of the trail is today, it is looking great, and I'm mightily proud of what has been achieved. james-hutton.org/deep-time-tr...

Terrible photo from the bus but my first look at the geology/deep time takeover of the Royal Scottish Academy on Princes Street, Edinburgh. I'm looking forward to exploring the hundreds of artworks. I'm expecting rocks. Lots of 'em!

Happy days! I arrived on Holyrood Road this morning to overhear a tour guide (with a non-specialist tour group) talking at length, authoritatively and correctly about James Hutton and the geology of Edinburgh. And the group were engaged in a story well told. My work here is done!

This winter I've been immersed in developing the Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point. A lot of work, but it is really starting to come together, and on schedule to complete in time to celebrate James Hutton's 300th birthday in June. You can find out more at james-hutton.org/deep-time-tr...

I am so privileged to visit Siccar Point again and again (third time this week) and see it in different moods, and in the company of geologists and non-geologists all of whom see different aspects of this unique and special place. Just needs an ice cream van or gift shop for scale, don't you think?

I had a great time last week exploring the south coast of the Ross of Mull with a Geowalks group. Stunning weather & beautiful rock: Moine metamorphic rock that is superbly exposed, the layering is mostly vertical and runs out to see, creating a varied coastline of steep-sided ridges and sandy bays.

Found 'em! There's a stack of Lost Drawings on my sofa, the parts are slotting into place for a big project next year. And if you don't know what the Lost Drawings are, don't worry you are going to hear a lot about them in 2025 and 2026!

Grim reality setting in now. Today's journey has been very smooth, but we'd have arrived an hour ago with an ICE. Now on fourth (and final?) charge, with 90 miles to go. Mind you, we're going to my mother-in-law's, maybe I'd rather be sitting in a dark car park in the rain 😁.
130
Angus Miller @geowalks.scot · 29/11/2024
How far can you get before you need to stop and charge? It depends! Almost entirely on road speed (or speed relative to the air: headwinds are a pig). Motorway speeds drain a battery fast, definitely a tortoise and hare situation! On slow roads we can easily do 150 miles. Otherwise, maybe 80.
100
Angus Miller @geowalks.scot · 29/11/2024
One other big barrier is it would be very difficult to do a journey like this solo. A navigator is pretty essential to find chargers, keep an eye on distances and tell the driver when they need to slow down to conserve charge (we'll come back to that!). Will get easier as more chargers come online.
Driver and navigator.

Angus Miller @geowalks.scot · 29/11/2024
ICE = internal combustion engine. The important acronyms though are Chademo and CCS, two types of rapid (journey) charging. Doesn't matter what they stand for (ok I don't know) but think VHS and Betamax. We are on the wrong side of this one, Chademo chargers are less common and going out of fashion.
110
Angus Miller @geowalks.scot · 29/11/2024
I'm making it all sound rosy, eh? But journeys like this take way longer than an ICE would. About one-third of our time is spent charging. Not always at pretty places (although we've a strange affection for this place and it's wooden cowboy). And our battery is now hot, which slows down charging.

210
Angus Miller @geowalks.scot · 29/11/2024
The future of charging provision is actually already here. Soon every stopping place will want to have a bank of chargers like this. Provide enough reliable chargers and customers stop and spend money.
