Paul Giamatti, Caltech seismologist, in San Andreas (2015). USGS seismologist Lucy Jones fact-checked it live: the San Andreas maxes out around magnitude 8.2, can't hit the film's 9.6, and can't crack open a canyon. But "drop, cover, hold on" was spot on. Verdict: great advice, bad physics.

Daniel Plainview, There Will Be Blood (2007) "I drink your milkshake!" is real petroleum law. It's the rule of capture: you can drain oil from under a neighbor's land through your own well. Director PTA based the speech on 1920s Senator Albert Fall's testimony. Verdict: ruthless, but accurate.

Sherlock Holmes (yes, really!) In A Study in Scarlet (1887) Watson rates Holmes's geology: "Practical, but limited. Tells at a glance different soils." That fiction helped inspire forensic geology. In 1904 chemist Georg Popp solved a real murder using soil on a suspect's trousers.

Gaëtan "Mole" Molière from Atlantis (2001) tastes soil to identify it, then tells you where you've walked. Sounds absurd. It isn't: geologists really do the grit test, grinding sediment between the teeth to tell silt from clay, plus the fossil-lick test. Verdict: gross, but legit. #geology

Ramsay, for his part, reportedly keeps returning to the fossil record. "After the worst extinctions and ice ages, the oceans made ooids the size of marbles, far past today's limit. No modern sea can repeat it." He adds: "I think about the Triassic ones weekly."
000
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Asked whether the question can be settled, Fieri pointed at the missing experiment. "Show me one grown sterile. Every attempt to make ooids in a clean lab has come back inconclusive. Until somebody grows a pearl with no culture in the room, the recipe is unproven."
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
One point of rare agreement, per both interviews: ooids barely ever grow. Each grain spends most of its existence buried and dormant, adding layers only during brief stints stirred up into the waves, a single 2 mm pearl can take centuries to finish. Ramsay calls it "the slowest kitchen on Earth."
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Ramsay has since DOUBLED DOWN on the chemistry. "Residue is not authorship: every surface in the sea carries fingerprints. The pearl grows while it rolls, gets sanded while it tumbles, and stops when the two balance."

Chef Guy Fieri reveals in an interview that he is firmly in the MICROBIAL camp. "Cut one open. Between the layers you find fats, proteins, sugars, residue of living films. Those films coat every grain in that water. I've spent a career detecting fermentation. That is fermentation."

Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Ooids are tiny carbonate spheres, usually under two millimetres, that grow layer by layer while rolling in warm, lime-saturated shallows: and entire limestone formations are built from them. Whether they form by pure chemistry or with microbial help has been fought over for more than a century
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
Chef Gordon Ramsay reportedly a STAUNCH DEFENDER of abiotic ooid formation. "They're limestone pearls rolled smooth in the surf, spherification with no chef, no oyster, no help. Warm water loaded with dissolved lime, agitation, time. The technique needs nothing alive. That's what makes it perfect."

What to know about the geodynamo paradox: – Earth's magnetic field is ≥3.5 B years old – The inner core, today's main power source, may only be ~0.5–1 B years old – Iron's conductivity, remeasured in 2012, broke the old energy budget – Candidate fixes: MgO exsolution, SiO₂ crystallization

Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Bellingham responds to Håland: "There's a whole suspect list for the missing power source. Magnesium oxide raining out of the young core. Silica crystallizing. Even a dynamo running in a molten-rock ocean at the base of the mantle. He's acting like nobody has a theory."
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Håland also cited a 2019 paleomagnetism study finding that 565 million years ago, Earth's field was roughly ten times weaker than today, evidence the dynamo was close to dying before inner-core freezing began and, in his words, "saved it at the last minute."
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Håland recently doubled down in a new interview: "In 2012 they recalculated how well iron conducts heat at core pressures. The number came back two to three times higher than everyone had assumed. The old power budget collapsed overnight. Nobody talks about this."
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Håland is referring to the geodynamo's power problem. Today the field is driven by the slow freezing of the inner core, which releases heat and light elements that stir the liquid outer core. Rocks record a magnetic field going back at least 3.5 B years, but the inner core seems to be far younger.
100
Geoscopy — Geology, explained. @geoscopy.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Erling Håland from Manchester CIty reportedly "does not trust" the standard history of Earth's magnetic field. "The inner core is half a billion years old. The field is three and a half billion years old. So who was paying the bill for three billion years?" #geology

Honeycomb toffee and pumice are both foams frozen in place: gas bubbles expand through a hot liquid, then get trapped as it hardens. In toffee, the bubbles are mostly CO₂ from baking soda; in pumice, they’re volcanic gases exsolving from magma as pressure drops. 🌋 #geology
