Planting more trees with @theorchardproject.bsky.social and @earthwatcheurope.bsky.social yesterday in Stoneyfields Park, Edgware. It was Imbolc, Celtic spring, Tu B'Shevat, the Jewish New Year for Trees, and St Brigid's Day, the patron saint of poetry - so a poem by the wonderful Janet Sutherland

I made it to 4 wassails this month in North London: Friary Park, Castlehaven, Hollickwood Park and Broomfield Park. Great community bonding, bonkers, joyous celebrations, and a giant pigeon called Big Pidge! Loved seeing the New Esperance Morris dancers

Lovely new Lebanese falafel joint opened a month ago on North Finchley high street, in the alley to Lodge Lane car park. Arif is a great guy! Car park due to be flattened for 0% affordable luxury flats. Concerned about the impact of the developments? Join the conversation: @ournorthfinchley.org

A fun session recently with #Goodgym Barnet at Northway Gardens. Great weather for a 5km round trip from the Phoenix, lopping self-seeding trees along the banks of the Mutton Brook
Six Goodgym runners in a line wearing Goodgym branded sports wear smiling at the camera. Two hold up garden loppersFour Goodgymmers on the banks of the Mutton Brook, two holding loppers, two holding branches from elder tree saplings for them to cut back. On the left in a dashing sun hat, Brian Ingram, the indomitable volunteer manager for Northway Gardens, directs the Goodgymmers, his arm pointing at where to cut.

In March, ~100 volunteers + several from #Goodgym planted 1800 trees in 3 new tinyforests by the Mutton Brook: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Yesterday, ~12 people planted 433 *more* trees that were held back for warmer weather: www.goodgym.org/v3/reports/a... Thanks @earthwatcheurope.bsky.social!

Also spotted a nuthatch last week, working up a trunk on the green at the bottom of my road
Let's be honest, this is a pretty poor photo of a nuthatch on the side of a dead tree possibly oak. The bird is small but you can make out the distinct nuthatch shape and the orange-rust belly and dark back. But mostly you can see trunk, leaves and sky.

EPIC litter clear with #goodgym and the Pymmes Brookers yesterday. Took eight of us to get this beast up the bank. Best workout I've had in a while!
A man in shades, waders, thick red gloves, baseball cap and sunglasses, stands on rocks in the shallows of Pymmes Brook, surrounded by wood debris. Opposite him, embedded in the green bank and vegetation behind it, is a moped style motorbike, rusting, but intact. Two other volunteers are wrestling with more trash (a shopping trolley, not in view) behind some branches hanging over the stream.

Epic day yesterday with #Goodgym Barnet. We helped plant a whopping 3 new #tinyforests. All in, volunteers, school children and local residents plugged 1800 trees into the ground! And we made the BBC! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis... (21min35sec)
A wide shot of the meadow above Mutton Brook, with loads of volunteers in the distance with shovels, a mobile cafe and generator, a film crew and a handful of red Goodgym t-shirts. Behind them is a thin line of trees, still bare of leaves from winter, and a row of traffic on the North Circular at Henley's Corner, then some blocks of flats.

Spotted and reported a badly parked Lime bike on way to last night's #Goodgym session. Then a long 6km round trip to the Mutton Brook tinyforest to hang fat balls and seed feeders for the birds. Big session next week to plant 3 more tiny forests! Can you help? www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/...

Last night's #Goodgym run, view from the entrance to Glebelands Nature Reserve of the current skyline. Barnet Council and Regal JP have submitted plans to build 1502 flats in 25 storey tower blocks here. Today is the last day for comments: publicaccess.barnet.gov.uk/online-appli...
A pink orange sunset with light clouds in the sky, and the dark outline of low buildings and trees. In the foreground, a large grassy playing field, and a path stretches off along the left on the edge of a dense tree line.

#Goodgym #Barnet will be frolicking in ancient woodland this Saturday: www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/... Great opportunity to come along and see what we do, if you've never done a session before!
Four sporty people in Goodgym branded t-shirts standing in Highgate woods, with tall trees behind them and lots of greenery. Fallen logs are lined up to mark the edge of paths. In the middle a fifth person - the forest ranger - stands with his thumbs up, smiling and wearing outdoorsy clothes. A dog sits on the left with his back to the camera. This is Gus. He is a labradoodle.

One of our brilliant #Barnet #Goodgym runners, Penny Salman has been recognised by Barnet Council for inspiring people to upcycle clothing instead of binning it at www.instagram.com/threadsforap... www.goodgym.org/v3/reports/g...
A photograph of Penny Salman wearing clothing she has designed herself: black striped shirt with vertical grey stripes, black and white checkered trousers, a red cravat-type neckerchief, tied in a bow. She has ginfer hair and earring hoops and is standing in front of a cycle hoops and a red brick building.

Last night's #Goodgym Barnet run from the Phoenix to Shepherds Hill. Amazing views of Highgate and a clear sky for the planets. I did the full loop from home so hit 12km. Also, what is this amazing horse statue outside the Engine Rooms? Even the Londonist doesn't know: londonist.com/london/great...

Last week's night #Goodgym session was a mulch special for a forest garden at a school in East Finchley. Really enjoying not sitting at home vegetating of an evening!
A varied group of people in sporty or outdoors clothes at night (a few in Goodgym t-shirts) holding shovels and standing in front of a pile of woodchip, at night.Three people digging at a pile of mulch at night with shovels. Two are in motion and very blurry because they're trying to fill a wheelie bin.

Really sad to see another business on North Finchley high street targeted by criminals. I really like CeX because they help keep electronics in use instead of in the bin. A shame the police and council aren't doing anything about the criminals regularly targeting local businesses #barnetgreenparty

The word 'charitisation' popped into my head yesterday, thinking about how charities have taken up responsibility for welfare in so many areas. An internet search threw this letter up from 1997, just before that timely election: www.independent.co.uk/voices/lette...
A screenshot of the opening lines from the letter linked in the post, with the following text highlighted: "Whatever the result of the election the next government will look more to charities for the delivery of welfare."

Now is a good a time as any to officially announce: My next collection of poetry, Parchment Scalpel Rock will be published in May 2026 by @brokensleepbooks.bsky.social It'll be a kind of 'best of' drawing on a series I've been working on for nearly 20 years.
The underside of a snail climbing invisible glass against a blurry sky and landscape, it's feelers stretched up and wide like arms raised in joy. Imagine it's saying yay! really loudly.
