Georgetown Time Machine: Georgetown Branch
This week on Georgetown Time Machine, I'm checking out another photo from the DC Historical Society. It was taken just west of the Old Aqueduct abutment. While much of the scene is at least similar to what you'd see today, the obvious difference is that there's a goddam freight train passing by.That's because what we now know as the Capital Crescent Trail was for a long time a railroad spur known as the Georgetown Branch.

Q & A Cafe Celebrates 25 Years
Twenty-five years ago, in the wake of 9/11 Georgetowner Carol Joynt merged her background as a journalist with her then livelihood as a pub-owner and started the Q & A Cafe. For years the interview show was filmed right within the hallowed walls of that pub, Nathans. After an unforgiving landlord eventually sent the restaurant packing, Joynt eventually settled in at the George Town Club and kept going.

Northwest Georgetown October ANC Update
Hello and welcome to your October northwest Georgetown ANC update! If there’s a theme to this month’s report, it’s progress! Volta Park The first quantum of progress we accomplished recently is with Volta Park. This past month the city finally installed a whole bunch of new “big belly” trash cans in the park: This came primarily from the diligent efforts of (and financial contributions from) the Friends of Volta Park.

City Finally Moves Forward With Parking Officer Overtime Program
The DC Council is finally moving forward on a proposal that would potentially increase the reliability of parking enforcement in neighborhoods like Georgetown. The bill, the Strategic Parking Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2026, would create a new reimbursable detail program for DPW ticket enforcement officers. This would allow organizations like Georgetown University and the Georgetown BID to pay for additional targeted ticket enforcement in designated areas.

New Trash Bins at Volta
After years of a major overflowing trash problem (and, consequentially, a rat problem) the Department of Public Works installed new trash bins at Volta Park. This was accomplished in partnership with the Friends of Volta Park. Unlike the previous open top trash bins, these new bins are fully enclosed and open with a pedal at the bottom. They are as rat-proof as a trash bin can be.

Cannabis Shop Application Renewed With Questionable Distance Survey
Last June I reported that there was a new permit application for a retail cannabis shop at 1658 33rd St. This confused me because there is another licensed cannabis shop at 1641 Wisconsin Ave. Cannabis retail shops are not allowed to open within 400 feet of another licensed cannabis shop. And by a quick look at Google Maps, it's pretty clear the buildings are well under 400 feet apart:

This week for Georgetown Time Machine, I'm swinging down to the waterfront. The photo, from the DC Historical Society archives, shows "a group of fishermen" at a boathouse on the water, across from Analostan Island (the old name for Roosevelt Island). The photo is dated to 1921. There's not much more I can add, really. The scene is fairly ramshackle, which is what the waterfront was like for most of its existence.

New architectural plans are in this month for Old Georgetown Board review. As is usually the case that also includes plans that include new stores. This month it's two stores I haven't reported on previously. The first, above, is Adriana Hoyos (not Hoyas) at 3328 M St. It's an expensive furniture store that will fit in perfectly at Cady's Alley, where it's going (or perhaps has already open?)

New Doggy Daycare Coming
A new doggy daycare/dog training location is apparently coming to 1723 Wisconsin Ave. The facility appears to be called Glover Bark, and from the signage will offer traiing, boarding, and doggy daycare. The sign lists a website connected with Scott Dancer, a Glover Park-based dog walker and trainer. That, of course, brings up one funny angle in all of this: Is this the first time something located in Georgetown is trading on the Glover Park name?

Come Celebrate Georgetown’s 275th Birthday!
Sure the United States of America finally reached the passé age of 250 this year. Bo-ring! Your neighborhood reached the much classier age of 275 this year. Time to celebrate! The Citizens Association of Georgetown is throwing a party to mark the occasion September 17th at the City Tavern. That's an incredibly fitting location for such a party, as the City Tavern is itself 230 years old and served an important role in Georgetown during the first years of the new District of Columbia.

(Sorry for the poor photo with the car blocking the shot.) Dolcezza was founded in Georgetown in 2004 and operated at 1560 Wisconsin Ave. for many years. As reported in the Georgetowner, Cady's Alley's long standing heart, Kafe Leopold, closed yesterday. The local favorite was open for 21 years. As Anthony Lanier has recounted many times before, as he was developing Cady's Alley, he couldn't convince a restauranteur to take a chance on the space. So he simply decided to do it himself, so he teamed with Paul Guzzardo to recreate the Austrian cafe's of his homeland.

This week on Georgetown Time Machine, I'm checking out a photo from when M St. was a much different place from what it is today. It was way more oriented towards cars, with about half a dozen garages, a few car dealerships, and today's item: an auto-parts store. This store occupied the historic Georgetown Market building. This is a building I've written about many times in the past, but in short: it was a market building constructed by the city of Georgetown in 1865 on a location that had hosted another market since 1795.

Northwest Georgetown June ANC Update
Hello and welcome to your June Northwest Georgetown ANC update! What incredible weather we’re (finally) having! Just in time for it to immediately turn to the brutal summer heat with swarms of mosquitos! Alert: Aggressive Late Night Ticketing The community—including the ANC, CAG, the University, and many others—have been pleading with the Department of Public Works (DPW) to restore regular and aggressive parking enforcement to address the huge and persistent problem of people coming to Georgetown and parking all day long with no consequences.

New Mural Along Water Street
The Citizen M Hotel appears to be nearing completion. And part of finishing up apparently involves adding a new mural to the eastern facade. The mural can be seen above. It depicts part of a crew team as it rows into the sunset (or sunrise) (or ceaselessly into the past). It's a fitting theme for a hotel so close to one (and someday two) rowing boathouse(s).

Bike to Work Day This Friday
The annual Bike to Work Day is this Friday. As is usual, the Georgetown BID will be hosting a pit stop at the Georgetown Waterfront Park. Register here if you plan to stop by. Bike to Work Day is a great way to explore biking as an option for your commute. I'm a daily bike commuter myself, but 15 years ago I was not.
