Acquiring a mental schema of associative abstract rules enables insight-like accelerated new related learning. Now we reveal that generative reconfiguration of hippocampus-prefrontal networks during sleep/rest supports a map-based accelerated learning and systems consolidation: rdcu.be/NjSfvUDuMw4a

Please read my Retrospective of Susumu Tonegawa (1939-2026): A scientist of three eras. I feel very grateful for his mentorship that sculpted my scientific approach during my postdoctoral years at MIT www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

In a new @natcomms.nature.com study, Yale Psychiatry & @yaleneuro.bsky.social's @georgedragoi.bsky.social found that when assessing a new environment, the brain switches 🧠 between prior mental maps 🗺️. Dragoi suggests that this "mental flickering" may be essential to learning!

The Brain Navigates New Spaces By ‘Flickering’ Between Reality and Old Mental Maps
A new Yale study reveals the brain's internal map doesn't just track one’s current location, it constantly "flickers" between the present space and remembered

Interesting theta sequence-replay-learning relationships! Consistent with Winson's '78 work on theta disruption impairing learning and our (Farooq & Dragoi '19; DOI: 10.1126/science.aav0502) work on emergence of preplay and waking rest replay prior to theta sequences during rat postnatal development

We reveal what theta sequences, representational drift, and flickering between alternate representations (as forms of non-local spatial representations) have in common and how and when they emerge and express via internal generative processes.
