Today’s been very “walk, shop, garden, read about the structural failings exposed by a global crisis.” On call life meets quiet reflection with When This Is Over. Sunshine softens the blow… slightly.

Sometimes, even on a Monday morning, you’ve just got to dance into the office like no one’s watching. In the middle of uncertainty, a little laughter and cheer go a long way.

It’s only Thursday morning, and this week has already delivered post-holiday blues, a sickness bug, NHSE announcing they’re cutting jobs by 50%, a family emergency, and now a delayed train… At this rate, a rave or a club might be the only way to lift my spirits! 🥴🤣

Twice in just over a week, I’ve been subtly told I’m too young to do certain things or that I should be careful for my own good. Funny how ‘looking out for me’ always seems to mean ‘know your place.’ I could scream. When are we going to start fixing this patronising culture?

Emergency response is full of contradictions: plans we never use, frameworks we don’t question, and failures we keep repeating. I write about all of it—the good, the bad, and the absurd. If that’s your thing, check out my Substack. gbarber.substack.com #EPRR #Resilience #BlueskyCommunity

Been thinking… what if we made a TV show about EPRR? A dark comedy-drama, After Life meets Hospital. Title: Code Brown “When crisis hits, someone’s got to clean it up.” Follows an NHS crisis team juggling real disasters, outdated plans & clueless people. Dark, funny, relatable

Emergency planning exercises are meant to prepare us—but they also expose how much we expect from responders & the public. We need policy change, realistic planning, and trust-building—because next time, it won’t be a drill. 📖 Read my full blog: gbarber.substack.com/p/exercise-e...

And so begins another week on call… Hoping for a slightly calmer one this time while helping the NHS respond effectively when it matters most. 📟 #NHSResilience

That was a staff briefing no one was expecting. Thinking of colleagues across NHSE at what is sure to be an unsettling and difficult time. If you’re working with or interacting with NHSE colleagues, please take a moment to check in. A little kindness goes a long way. #NHSEngland

#NewBlogPost Love is a theme that has been explored in countless songs, poems, and works of art throughout history. Yet, every so often, a new expression of love emerges that resonates deeply and universally. open.substack.com/pub/gbarber/...

How adaptable are our emergency frameworks, really? 🚨 We’ve got structured plans and policies, but do they actually work across different types of incidents - or are we forcing every crisis into the same rigid box? Keen to hear thoughts!

The Inevitable Guest: Why We Need to Talk About Death None of us gets to skip the check-out line. It’s a truth that’s as humbling as it is universal. Yet, in our reluctance to face it, we often miss the opportunity to embrace the very thing mortality is here to teach us: how to truly live.

Last school governor activity of the year today: a celebration assembly honouring the achievements of students and staff over the term and year, and sadly bidding farewell to two much-loved members of staff. It wouldn’t feel festive, of course, without singing We Wish You a Merry Christmas!

Reflections on Resilience: A Year of Growth, Change, and New Horizons
2024 has been a year of transformation - stepping into new roles, embracing change, and reflecting on the balance between structure and adaptability in emergency planning. As I near the completion of my Master's and contemplate the leap into a PhD, I’m reminded of the dualities that define my journey: strategic leadership alongside ambulance shifts, the rigor of academic exploration balanced by the creativity of spoken word. As 2025 approaches, I look forward to continuing this journey - fostering resilience in systems, communities, and the next generation. Here’s to growth, connection, and the uncharted roads ahead.

Reflecting on My Journey: The Fabric of Emergency Planning and Community Resilience
This weekend, as I walked the dog and reflected on my journey into emergency planning, I was struck by the incredible tapestry of people and experiences that have shaped both my career and who I am today. From the early encouragement of youth officers, who taught me to challenge the status quo and embrace my individuality, to the career-focused guidance of mentors like Kate, Gareth, and Steve, every influence has been pivotal. These connections—professional and personal—have not only shaped my resilience but also fueled my passion for supporting the next generation of practitioners. Emergency planning, much like life, is about weaving together the threads of experience, community, and collaboration to ensure we recover and thrive in the face of adversity.
