Hello, I’m a disruptor, very smart, here to create efficiency. I’m just going to drill holes in the bottom of this boat to see which parts of the hull are mission-critical.

You're not wrong. I haven't been paying attention to the trade deadline live this year, other than what the guys talk about in the Discord server, and have just been going to The Athletic's grades round-up since everything I need is there.

Logan Brown is just on waivers because he was on an AHL Contract and signed to an NHL deal for depth. But on Atkinson... correct. Philly friend told me beginning of the year he looked cooked last year, and that played out.

I've been pulling AHL, OHL, and WHL data together. Wanted to dip my toe into trying some kind of modeling. Immediately felt in completely over my head lol.

Also, that 23 year old 3rd round pick that's still in the AHL and only has one cup of coffee in the NHL? Definitely worth the equivalent of a top 5 draft pick.

Another model I saw today was pointing strongly to LAK at least in part because of their strong home record and VGK being around .500 on the road.

#GoldRace The nhl, and many other leagues, would be improved by adopting gold drafting, which makes the existing schedule more exciting for fans, eliminates tanking discourse, and gives the best draft picks to the weakest teams, who need them the most. This is the 2024-2025 thread.

My roommate uses "That's rough, buddy" fairly often, and I started picking up on using it without knowing where it came from, until someone responded to me with "Did you just quote Avatar?" Then I found out about the reference lol

If it's Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, then it's just a surgery to remove the rib, blood thinners, and time to let the blood clot break up. There's been a few hockey players that have gone through this.

If it's Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, then that's a fixable issue.

If it's the same thing (not sure it is, but it sounds like it might be), I know of multiple hockey players that had a blood clot issue that was caused by a bone pinching a blood vessel going into the arm. Surgery, blood thinners, time, and they were fine.

Yeah, it can be tough. I thought there would be more Finn defensemen out there when I went digging around in the hypothetical "who could they have called up?" And really the only big name that stuck out was Sami Vatanen, and even though he's not what he was, would think they'd rather have had him.

The unfortunate problem of it only being NHL players. If they could have pulled from Euro leagues, the smaller countries would have more access to depth, especially veteran depth that might fit in better dropping into a tournament.

Saw this on Reddit and I love this … such a Philly thing. Go birds.
A very old Eagles Starter jacket with a note attached. The note reads: if found, do NOT return. This jacket belongs to you. I found this jacket on the night of the Super Bowl in 2018 and it only felt right to release it back into the city when the Eagles won again. I hope you have the opportunity to release back into the world with another SB win soon. - Go Birds

It's the little things that turn me off for it. Like... if the whole point and purpose of this tournament is to generate revenue and increase HRR... why did we decide to throw away a game and not have a 3rd place game? Why didn't we schedule this as a Saturday doubleheader in Boston?

On the other hand, Sheary has been the best forward in Syracuse since he was sent down and is currently the 2nd leading scorer on the Crunch. Sure, Duke's an option with more goals and less points, but he's still developing. Jesse Ylonen is next. Then Huuhtanen.

My quick analysis is that... he would probably have some value. Probably a mid-round pick kind of deal. I don't think it's an outright salary dump, unless other teams are projecting him to decline to being a sub-30 point player for the rest of the contract. But he's only 29.

We're already not far from that point in Florida with homeowners insurance. Rates are skyrocketing. People are being dropped left and right. Insurance companies are pulling out. All that's left is the underfunded Citizens insurance... and the legislature will continue to do nothing about it. =)

Oh BTW, I had forgotten to look. Hedman was 2nd in EH WAR in 2016-17, between Pesce and Slavin at 4.2 WAR. Highest of his career. Compared to 2.6 for Burns and 2.4 for Karlsson. Hard to not think that if Analytics were more accepted then, he might have gotten the 2017 trophy. And more reputation.

GeoFitz4 @geofitz4.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
So Ryan... right there is your answer to why it's hard to believe he only has one Norris. He got caught in a weird transition period. He first had to compete with the guys that already had built the reputation and disregarded defense for points, then had to compete against analytics while he aged.

2021-22 - 3rd (4) behind Makar (92) and Josi (98). Total Votes: 1631-1606-940 Why didn't he win? Hedman was never seriously considered, despite being only a point behind Makar and tied with Josi in EH WAR. But none of that mattered to the voters because the Narrative had been Makar and Josi.

GeoFitz4 @geofitz4.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
as an argument in their favor, rather than it being more about the shared opinion of "this guy is good at the defense" spreading to the voters and support for him building. With more data and analysis available, that spread has been quicker and wider with more acceptance of analytics.

GeoFitz4 @geofitz4.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
I'm also going to say, along with the Selke, I feel like the Norris is a trophy that has been a lot more influenced by advanced stats and WAR. And that has hurt Hedman. He had to go through the "grow your reputation first" phase that the young guys have not had to, because WAR can be pointed to

Just, further to that point... Points wise, he was right in there with them. Fox had 47, Makar 44, and Hedman 45. Barrie led defensemen with 48. Fox and Makar only had 1 more EV point than Hedman, so just as reliant on the power play.

2020-21 - 3rd (22) behind Fox (40) and Makar (31). Total Votes: 743-655-433 Why didn't he win? Voters decided it was time for the new generation to be crowned. This was the transition to Fox, Makar, Hughes. The kind of regard that Hedman wasn't given until he was older and more well rounded.

2019-20 - 3rd (4) behind Josi (109) and Carlson (56). Total Votes: 1499-1267-820 Why didn't he win? This one was all about the points and the argument between Josi's 65 points and Carlson's 75 points. Would points or overall game be more important? Again, can't argue much here, Hedman had 55.

2018-19 - 3rd (1) behind Giordano (165) and Burns (2). Total Votes: 1690-720-585 Why didn't he win? Giordano basically did it all at EV. At 35, improbable win. I can't really argue with this one too much. He had 74 points and +39. Hedman only had 54 and missed 12 games. Reputation helped him to 3rd

2017-18 - 1st (94) ahead of Doughty (52) and Subban (11). Total Votes: 1385-1164-565 Why did he win? A little bit of luck, I guess. He had 63 points. Doughy 60, Subban 59, Jones 57, Carlson 68, Klingberg 67. Felt like the first year voters didn't award it based on sorting by points.

2016-17 - 3rd (3 first place votes) behind Burns (96) and Karlsson (63). Total Votes: 1437-1292-728 Why didn't he win? Well, because he had 72 points, and Burns had 29 goals and 76 points. And Karlsson had 1 more point and goal than Hedman, but Karlsson's reputation carried him ahead of Hedman.

Clipping this for the "hard to believe he only has one trophy." Yeah... while we generally do think of him as being one of the best defensemen at his peak, he was always just behind in points to the guys that sacrificed a lot of defense for their offense.
