Amongst a whole host of pollinators on the water mint in our douit (small Guernsey stream), the common blues really stood out today. The drought may not have been good for most plants and animals but the ants, on which common blue larvae depend, have been very happy this year.

Over three nights of the weekend, 485 moths turned up in the trap, exactly 100 different species, of which 25 were new for the year, with rarely reported for Guernsey being Bordered Beauty, Round-winged Muslin, Bird Cherry Ermine, Webb’s Wainscot, Dusky Pearl, Acorn Piercer and European Corn-borer.

The most interesting thing in the moth trap last night was a wasp - an Enicospilus wasp to be precise. The larvae of these wasps feed on moth caterpillars, and the adults, like most moths, are nocturnal. The weird and wonderful, invisible world happening in our front garden…

One of the trees that grows really well in Guernsey’s climate is the gloriously bonkers Loquat. Everything it does is upside down - leaves drop in the Spring, flowers in the Autumn, sets fruit over the winter and produces delicious fruit early summer, all the time looking great #loveguernsey
