The response is amazing, isn't it? And I hope we get to work together again very soon, Kate. You're a wonderful writer. 🧡

Oh god, now you’re doing the same to me. Like when I remembered buying Ugly Kid Joe’s first album on tape. From Sam Goody, no less.

That’s easily 80% of my inbox these days. I get hit on both the CSS-Tricks and Smashing sides. My favorite are the timed follow-ups.

Feels like we’ve reached a point where our favorite releases from the 90s are closer to the favorite releases from the 60s than where we are in current times.

I love this idea! Makes a lot of sense even if there are CSS workarounds because those aren’t widely used and folks often reach for libraries for this sort of thing. And HTML is perfect for abstracting the need for regular JS cleanup.

The Front-End Community is Still Alive and Beautiful
I thought about dropping an addendum into my last post to say just how overwhelmed I am, in the best possible way, by the way all of you in the front-end community have shown up to show support, both for me and for CSS-Tricks. I started to do that but then felt a new post...

You’ll miss publishers when they’re gone
Ever since Piccalilli started to get traction, I’ve always seen CSS-Tricks, Smashing Magazine and A List Apart (among others) as peers. We all help each other behind the scenes and importantly, back each other. When CSS-Tricks was initially acquired by DigitalOcean, I was really happy for Chris. The work that he’d put into that publication […]

It's always an idea! I mean, DO owns the "brand" so to speak. At the same time, I'm still optimistic something will work out. I consider my work "paused" rather than "over."

It really, really is. I think we're all lucky to be part of a community like this. It's what made me a front-ender in the first place and still thrives despite the current climate of Things™. And you're very much a part of that, too!

Yeah I'm a good deal worried, too, Patrick. But probably more sad and disappointed more than anything else. And I think it goes beyond "get off my lawn" level. The thing we've loved and nurtured since we were kids is hanging on a pendulum that's swung so far to the right.

Digital Ocean ended their $50/month sponsorship of GNOME and FlatHub and went radio silent on CSS-Tricks right around the time they found a spare three million dollars to burn on “sponsoring” a high-profile racist’s dotfiles repo. Impossible to see this as anything but a statement of their values.

It's definitely a hard feel for all of us. And it's sorta weird, right? Even though it can feel defeating, I like the idea that we're less focused on the "bleeding edge" so to speak, and back to the human craft of making things in the same way web design was against the grain in the early 2000s.

This so much. I mean, I still love the craft of tech content, but yes, it feels very much like an ever-shrinking lonely island.
