Nice day at Bempton Cliffs today. Lots of Gannets still on the cliffs with near full grown young, skeins of Pink-footed Geese going south, first Brambling of the autumn and a sprinkling of warblers. Plus Clouded Yellow. #yorkshirebirding #birdmigration #yorkshirecoast

After a couple of days of rain how quickly the grass comes back and the oxbow lake is topped up here in the Wilthorpe Valley, Barnsley. #drought #rewilding #wildlife

Back on Tiree, Inner Hebrides again. First visited in 1986 😮 and visited twelve times since. Looking forward to a week of birding and with the family. A good start with at least 50 Snipe in a flock that flew over Hynish. Iceland birds? #tiree #scotland #ukbirding

All these past few weeks of heat and no rain but the emerging Oaks keep going while other species of trees die off. #survivors #climatechange #trees

Interesting stuff you are doing over there Ben. Back on home on ground it looks like a probable 4 territories this early spring in the Barnsley recording area. All at the upland reservoirs and none in the lowland areas.

Yes I would put it on as a record rather than not. It might ask for more information? Merlin occasionally gets a call wrong but Golden Oriole song is quite distinct.

Red Grouse nest on my recent survey of RSPB Dove Stones. I think with all the controversy surrounding this species it is overlooked as a tough native species of the uplands where it spends all year. Around 12-15 pair per sq km on unmanaged for shooting moor. #rspb #ukbirds #darkpeak

Out bird recording this morning and lots of typical woodland species including my first Garden Warblers this year. Lots of early spring flowers but like these Bluebells will be gone in a couple of weeks. A great time of year. #woodland #flowers

Back surveying on the Blanket Bog at RSPB Dove Stones. The expected Golden Plover, Dunlin and Curlew but occasional Swallow flying north and quite a few Wheatear catching insects before moving on. Surprisingly mostly males of “our” race and not the “Greenland” ones.

Hi Dennis. Acoustic monitoring is becoming more common for surveys and the BTO are using and trialling this. It’s like using the Merlin app for bird song and calls. But in the end it’s how good the analysis is to come out with the results. It will log any night time flyovers of various species.

No rivers or land features to follow just the open sea. Stars or magnetic? Migration is fascinating.

It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

A male Siskin feeding on Alder cones along the River Dearne at Wilthorpe, Barnsley yesterday. Probable migrant, although they breed nearby on the edge of the Pennines. #birds #birdphotography #ukbirding #nature #siskin

Fly agaric Amanita mascara in the local woodland. Usually found under Silver Birch toxic to humans but eaten by some animals. This has survived so far. #fungi
